With gifted/high ability learners, I assign interest group projects frequently and they are returned with great success. However, the regular work like math or writing tends to be less than desirable. If you have tried something new or different that works, please share with me. 08-25-2004, 09:19 AM I have my students peer review homework. It is wonderful! The students tease one another when they don't do homework. I created a competitive home system. Students are grouped each week. Those that receive the highest homework marks, receive a prize at the end of the week. Work wonders! Unregistered 08-28-2004, 06:16 PM I would like to know more about the competitive home system and your peer review for homework. Details, please. Joy Beth 08-28-2004, 10:09 PM Our new principal has a policy that says students get two strikes, then they're out. They have to stay one hour after school on their third offence (well..the next day actually ...after a warning is sent home that they will be staying after school) and parents have to come pick them up. It is a great way to get parents and students motivated! I'll let you know how it works for our school this year!

Do you get notes from little Johnny or Sally's teacher complaining about sloppy handwriting, daydreaming, or fidgeting in his or her seat? Here are some creative tips, innovative strategies, and commons sense approaches to one of today's biggest problems- homework. With teachers giving more homework than ever, we really must be armed for the task! Homework Help: How can I teach my student good study skills? 1. As young as nine or ten, your child should begin keeping an assignment book. In this book, the child needs to write each and every assignment given by his or her teachers. By instilling this habit into your child's daily routine, he or she will learn to be much more responsible. Less homework assignments will be lost or forgotten, and a good habit has been formed when you employ this technique. Be sure to make very specific rules about missing assignments. Also be firm and clear on the punishment that a child will face as a consequence of his or her missing an assignment. 2. Your child and you need to decide on a place that is conducive to study. This should be a quiet place that is well-lit and free from distractions. Once you have decided on a place to study, this should be the only place that your child does his or her homework and studies. There should also be a very specific time for homework to be done. Usually, as soon as the child gets home from school is the time for the homework to be done. This also goes for the kids who are involved in after school activities. Of course, it is a good idea to allow your child the opportunity to have a healthy snack before the work begins.

We have found that if this introductory mini-lecture is balanced between positive and negative impacts of computing, the students' lists are also likely to be balancedif our list is not balanced (for example, concentrating on negative impacts), theirs will be, too. Extractions: The Do's and Don'ts of Teaching Home Fire Safety by Jim Bowman Fires and burns are the second most common cause of death to children under 10, next to automobile crashes. That's why Battalion Chief Kevin Wiley, of the Oak Park, Ill., Fire Department, is a firm believer in teaching children about fire safety. A few years ago, a first-grader saved himself from a fire using the "stop, drop and roll" technique that Wiley taught him. The boy's shirt caught on fire as he sat near an open fireplace while on vacation. "He dropped and rolled on the cabin floor. It saved him," Wiley says. Fire Is Not Child's Play Children can be fascinated by fire. From the first-grader who sits too close to an open fireplace to a youth who unintentionally starts a fire, all kids need to be taught fire safety tips. Keith Patterson, director of public education for the Deerfield-Bannockburn, Ill., Fire Department, identifies and counsels juvenile fire-setters. Fire-setting, he says, is "correctable behavior." He offers parents the following advice: Do teach kids that fires and fire-making are for grown-ups. (Scouts are taught to make fires, but under supervision and with emphasis on safety procedures.)
