Let's Not Rush On A New Arena A pro sports team wants a new place to play, so it threatens to leave Pittsburgh . Mellon Arena is the oldest one in the National hockey League, http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05170/523993.stm
Extractions: You know the drill. A pro sports team wants a new place to play, so it threatens to leave Pittsburgh. The Penguins are bringing in a new California owner, so some zest has been added to the threat. Local sports commentators have rallied around the Penguins' desire for a new arena, with precious few questions asked, but then the argument is more alluring than most. The idea is to award the Penguins ownership group the license to a slots parlor. Then a new arena could be built with the lost change of countless losers, rather than tax money. When I pressed Penguins vice president of communications Tom McMillan to find out whether gambling profits could pay the full cost of a new arena, he deftly iced the puck. "Until we're ready to unveil the whole plan, we will not comment on specific details,'' he said. Let's hope the plan is as good as some say. A good plan would allow the state to play competing casino bids off against one another in the same way that professional sports franchises flirt with competing cities. If I'm the chief Pennsylvania Honcho in Charge of Deciding Who Gets to Drain Our Saps of Their Cash, I'm saying to every casino operator: The Penguins are offering to build Pittsburgh a new arena. Top that.

His 16 victories included consecutive U.S. Opens, a Masters and three straight Western Opens. He went undefeated in the 1937 Ryder Cup. But the tour's biggest winner lost it. Guldahl's game mysteriously vanished. In 1945, he was selling insurance while Nelson was winning 18 events, including 11 straight. Golf's worst slump had been replaced by its greatest streak.
