Extractions: snowhill@library.ucsb.edu The University of California's California Digital Library (CDL) formed an Ebook Task Force in August 2000 to evaluate academic libraries' experiences with electronic books (e-books), investigate the e-book market, and develop operating guidelines, principles and potential strategies for further exploration of the use of e-books at the University of California (UC). This article, based on the findings and recommendations of the Task Force Report ], briefly summarizes task force findings, and outlines issues and recommendations for making e-books viable over the long term in the academic environment, based on the long-term goals of building strong research collections and providing high level services and collections to its users. While electronic books and texts have been available for some time for selected public domain titles, only relatively recently have electronic texts been packaged and offered commercially as electronic books. It is the shift to the commercial production, sale, and distribution of e-books that has changed how libraries need to deal with e-books, and what prompted our investigation.

Those reels can be borrowed through their many Family History Centers tm located worldwide. The Family History Library has assigned its own reel numbers to their copies of Library and Archives Canada microfilm, such as our census returns and passenger lists. Consult the Family History Library Catalog to find the item description in the catalogue. Extractions: The Hope Library is based on the bequest of printed books and manuscripts of the Rev. F.W. Hope (1797-1862), J.O. Westwood, the first Hope Professor of Zoology (Entomology) (1805- 1893), and the libraries of O. Pickard-Cambridge and L.G. Higgins etc. It is a leading UK collection of older classic works in natural history, and of taxonomic entomology books and journals, and modern works are being added all the time. The collection comprises about 8,000 books and journals, including 100 current journal titles, and nearly 60,000 offprints. A listing of the manuscript collection is available from the Librarian. Geology The Arkell Library is based on the bequest of Jurassic geology books of W.J. Arkell. It comprises many of the older English classic works in geology, and continues to be updated with recent publications on Mesozoic palaeontology and geology. Other strengths of the collection include Palaeozoic works and Eastern European publications. The Arkell Library and other Geological Collections material comprises about 4,500 titles, including 14 current journals. Additionally, there are nearly 20,000 catalogued offprints. Most notable among the geological manuscripts are the papers of William Smith, the "father of English geology", William Buckland and John Phillips. Listings are available from the Librarian.
