SOUTHERN SHORE OF LAKE ERIE First maps of northern Ohio and the south shore of Lake Erie, before the Western Reserve: THE WESTERN RESERVE First manuscript maps to show the Western Reserve: Holland Land Company map of 1795. - This is a map produced for the owners of the Holland Land Company, in Amsterdam, who then owned a huge tract in upstate New York. They were interested in purchasing the Connecticut Western Reserve and dispatched one of their American surveyors, Ellicott, who produced this map. The map offers little more than an overview of the Reserve's outline, the Cuyahoga River and some generic fill about forests, but it predates anything produced by the Connecticut Land Company, who eventually did purchase the Reserve. The original manuscript map is in Amesterdam, but the SUNY/Fredonia made a 2/3 color copy of the map and has offered reprints for sale. Check the Western Reserve Historical Society gift shop, too. MAPS AND THE HISTORICAL TOPOGRAPHY OF BEIRUT These maps are thus historical sourcematerial of prime importance, as they illustrate the urban physiognomy of the city before its rapid expansion towards http://almashriq.hiof.no/lebanon/900/930/930.1/beirut/reconstruction/davie/Davie
Extractions: Five maps of Beirut, draughted in the mid- 19th century were used to help explain the initial Bronze Age choice for urban settlement, then to discover the Hellenistic and Roman grid street-pattern which survived in the disposition of the modern souks. The maps were also used to propose possible sites for the hyppodrome of the city, and to locate the mideaval defences of Beirut. Two distinct groups of documents were used for this study. Those drawn between 1831 and 1840, are sketches perhaps produced from memory, on which some details of military interest were added. Those drawn in 1841-1842 are real topographical maps, containing all the information required for military operations in the area and for policing an occupied town. These maps were surveyed by military engineers, with state of the art instruments: in the 10 years between these dates, the whole of the Levant had suddenly become the theatre of intense rivalry between the European powers. Western military, political or economic interests in the Near East were no longer content with vague sketches of strategically important areas.
Extractions: The collection of maps, atlases, charts and early geographies in the Library, is the largest such collection in Wales. The collection deals with all kinds of mapping including town plans, estate and farm plans and sea charts. It continues to grow through legal deposit, purchase and gift. By legal deposit the Library receives a copy of all maps commercially produced in the British Isles. This includes Ordnance Survey (OS) at all scales. OS SIMS (Survey Information on Microfilm) is also available for the whole of the British Isles at 1:2,500 and 1:1,250 scales. The Library has a comprehensive collection of 'historic' OS maps relating to Wales (e.g. an OS map of the centre of Cardiff, 1920 ) from the first 'One Inch to One Miles; survey of the early nineteenth century. There are photocopies for the counties of Wales of the original two-inch to the mile scale drawings of the OS made between 1809 and 1836 which formed the basis of the first edition One-Inch maps. Maps of medium scale (6":1 mile) and large scale (25":1 mile) appeared in the last quarter of the nineteenth century - the first edition published c.1870-90; second edition appeared c.1895-1905 and a third or provisional edition c.1919-1922 with a further update for some rapidly changing urban areas c.1937. (Large scale OS mapping of England and Scotland prior to 1987 is not available). The Library's primary interest in Welsh mapping is also reflected in the historical map collection. The Library has twenty-two different editions of the five variant version of Humphrey Lhuyd's
