Nearly 3,000 children from around the state entered the contest, and the five winners were recognized at a special ceremony at the Children's Discovery Center in late December. The four other winners were: Gina Mataafa of Lahaina, Riki Urasaki of Hilo, Kauwila Werner of Keaau, and Sheila Kamakura of Honolulu. Elementary school children (Kindergarten through fourth grade) were invited to pick one of HMSA's 5 A Day Friends (life-size fruit and vegetable mascots) and give it a name. They colored a picture of their favorite and described why they selected the name. HMSA's 5 A Day Friends make public appearances throughout the state to remind children and adults of the importance of eating five servings of fruits and vegetables every day.
