This task force has been assembled in an effort to better understand the implications of federal regulations and other legislation aimed at helping students with disabilities learn to their potential, namely the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) and No Child Left Behind (NCLB). “Educators in every state in our nation want to improve the learning outcomes for student with disabilities,” said Terry Bergeson, Washington State’s Superintendent of Public Instruction and chair of the CCSSO Task Force. “We must take advantage of this opportunity to move away from our heavy emphasis on compliance to a stronger focus on higher learning and achievement levels for all students with special needs.”

On Friday, NASA released its Record of Decision concerning the Outrigger Telescopes Project, selecting the W.M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea as the site for the project. In its decision, NASA states, "No alternate site matches the scientific capability of the W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, which hosts the world's two largest and most powerful telescopes. The W.M. Keck Observatory is found to offer the highest overall scientific potential, as well as the lowest technical and programmatic risk." Rising above 40 percent of the Earth's atmosphere, the dry, cloud-free summit of Mauna Kea is used as a platform for the world's largest observatory for optical, infrared, and submillimeter astronomy. There are currently 13 working telescopes near the summit of Mauna Kea, and four to six Outrigger telescopes are proposed.

Awards The UC IPM Pesticide Education Program's mission is to develop, test, evaluate, and disseminate pesticide safety education models and materials in order to reduce the harmful impacts of pesticides on people and the environment. Accomplishing this mission requires a team of professionals willing to collaborate with growers, pesticide handlers, UC farm advisors, regulatory agencies, and others to ensure that programs and materials accurately reflect current farming situations and address needs specific to California agriculture. These activities complement the efforts by other UC IPM programs to lower risks to people and the environment by reducing pesticide use in California. See our Web pages for information on the Pesticide Education Program's workshops and events (including training schedule), newsletter, publications, and more.
Extractions: HONOLULU, Hawaii , May 31, 2004 (ENS) - This is the season when state political parties gather to choose the delegates they will send to the national political conventions - to the Democratic convention July 26 to 29 in Boston, or to the Republican convention August 30 to September 2 in New York. Since the choice of Presidential contenders already has been decided, it falls to the stars of each party to energize the party faithful who will get out the vote for the November 2 election. At the Hawaii Democratic Convention on Saturday, former governor of Vermont Howard Dean, M.D., got the delegates up on their feet and applauding time and time again - against the Iraq war, for veterans' benefits, for universal health insurance, and for environmental protection linked to fair trade. Dean lost the Democratic presidential nomination to John Kerry earlier this year, but he is out on the campaign trail raising support for Kerry now.
