Kindergarten Entrance Age The entrance age cut-off dates for kindergarten are not uniform across states. Only five states (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Michigan, Vermont), the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands have cut-off dates between December 1 and January 1. This practice leads to a robust mix of 4-year-olds and 5-year-olds enrolled in kindergarten. Hawaii passed legislation to change the cut-off date from December 31 to August 1, beginning with the 2006-07 school year. Thirty-six states and Puerto Rico have kindergarten entrance cut-off dates between August 31 and October 16. These policies lead to fewer 4-year-olds entering kindergarten, but classrooms consist of a combination of 4- and 5-year-olds entering each fall. Four states (Alaska, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio) have cut-off dates on or before August 15. While legislative intent cannot be determined without additional research, it can be supposed that these states want to ensure all children are 5 years old before they enter kindergarten. Hawaii passed legislation to change the cut-off date from December 31 to August 1, beginning with the 2006-07 school year.

Extractions: Our Story The Domestic Violence Clearinghouse and Legal Hotline (DVCLH) has been working to reduce domestic abuse in Hawaii for over a decade. We are the only agency in the State whose services are uniquely designed to provide civil legal assistance and advocacy to domestic abuse victims, and whose caseload is comprised exclusively of these victims. Founded in 1990 and incorporated in 1991, DVCLH is also the only agency in the State that accepts large numbers of high risk contested divorce, temporary restraining order, post decree and paternity cases. Experiences with our own clients and extensive networking with other service providers have made us painfully aware that victims of domestic violence and their children are not receiving the help they need. We want to continue using our expertise to improve their safety and progress towards self-sufficiency and personal healing. The project is an educational partnership that includes private organizations, state agencies and federal agencies that share a collective vision for creating a healthier future for Hawai`i and for our planet. We hope to change behaviors by creating an awareness of the ecological problems we face and by demonstrating how decisions we make in our daily lives can help resolve those problems. The goal of Navigating Change is to motivate, encourage and challenge people to take action to improve the environmental conditions in their own backyards, especially as it pertains to our coral reefs. We want people to take responsibility for the stewardship and sustainability of our islands and our ocean. We are targeting our message to the youth of Hawai`i because the future is in their hands. To raise awareness of the environmental decline occurring in the main Hawaiian Islands, the Polynesian Voyaging Society has sailed the double hulled canoe Hokule`a throughout the main Hawaiian Islands carrying the Navigating Change message. School children and entire communities were challenged to take responsibility for our natural resources and our natural environment. This statewide sail began in March 2003.
Extractions: If they were laid atop the continental United States, the NWHI would cover a distance equal to that between New York City and Omaha, or Boston and the Florida Everglades. The living coral reef colonies of the NWHI are a spectacular underwater landscape covering thousands of square miles and composing the majority of coral reefs in the Uniited States. These reefs are some of the healthiest and most undisturbed coral reefs remaining and comprise possibly the last large-scale, predator-dominated coral reef ecosystem on the planet. Over millennia, invertebrate animals and algae have constructed massive structures in the shallow seas. Coral animals, bonded to basalt from ancient volcanoes, secreted skeletons of calcium carbonate that formed the substance of future reef growth. The NWHI coral reefs are the foundation of an ecosystem that hosts more than 7,000 species, including marine mammals, fishes, sea turtles, birds, and invertebrates. Many are rare, threatened, or endangered. At least one quarter are endemic, found nowhere else on Earth. Many more remain unidentified or even unknown to science. Unexplored deep-sea habitats, expensive and challenging to survey, may provide new species records to science for decades. Even the shallow coral reef habitats hold new species to science. This is especially true for invertebrates and algae.

Education * Research * Advocacy . The heart of the American Lung Association of Hawaii's mission is to help people with lung disease and breathing problems and to raise the awareness of individuals on how to prevent lung disease or how to deal with a lung disease on a daily basis. Education and Advocacy programs include areas such as tobacco control, asthma and air quality. Research programs supported by the American Lung Association of Hawaii help to develop new ways to reduce suffering from lung disease for individuals and the general public. The American Lung Association of Hawaii supports Asthma Sports Day camps on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. In partnership with local schools, ALAH provides asthma education for children and their families through programs such as Open Airways for Schools. ALAH also worked with schools statewide to help students avoid or reduce addiction to tobacco products. More than a thousand young people were reached last year through our Tobacco Control Programs, such as N-O-T (Not On Tobacco), an early intervention program designed to help youths smoking regularly reduce tobacco use or quit altogether, and Freedom From Smoking on Line.

Extractions: Each State has a protection and advocacy agency that receives funding from the Federal Center for Mental Health Services. Agencies are mandated to protect and advocate for the rights of people with mental illnesses and to investigate reports of abuse and neglect in facilities that care for or treat individuals with mental illnesses. These facilities, which may be public or private, include hospitals, nursing homes, community facilities, board and care homes, homeless shelters, jails, and prisons. Agencies provide advocacy services or conduct investigations to address issues that arise during transportation or admission to such facilities, during residency in them, or within 90 days after discharge from them. Extractions: Four independent non-profit agencies found themselves facing two potentially critical problems early in 1996: increasing operational costs and decreasing funding sources. When they began to discuss solutions, they realized that traditional strategies would not produce effective long-term results. The agencies then began to explore alternative organizational structures based on collaboration. Together, the four partners of DiverseAbilities have dedicated themselves to combining efforts to provide persons with disabilities vastly improved opportunities for learning, living, working and participating in the common life of their communities. They welcome any inquiries from others who wish to learn more about the process of collaboration.
