Introduction Sounds Links Technical notes/Kudos These samples are each approximately fifteen seconds long, files of about 300K, dubbed from compact discs. The "CD info" links each go to an appropriate entry at another site where you may learn more about or purchase the disc. In some cases, they also have better sound samples from these albums, using RealAudio or other formats. These sound samples (all in stereo) are of reasonable quality but are certainly not great: they do not represent accurately the sound quality of the recordings. They are here primarily for use in rough comparisons among the instruments: the basic features of the sound. The actual instruments sound quite a bit different, especially regarding high harmonics. If possible, play and listen to representative instruments in person, or find these and other similar recordings. On the plus side, all these samples are distorted similarly by the CD-sampling utility I used...it's a level playing field. The utility was an early one (1996), and I probably should remake all of these samples someday....

Extractions: No wonder Bach had one custom-built to his own specifications. Over a period of some three centuries there are plenty of references to gut-stringed instruments that resemble the harpsichord and imitate the delicate soft timbre of the lute (including its lower-sounding variants, the theorbo and chitarrone or archlute) or the harp, but little concrete information. Not a single such instrument has survived, nor is any contemporary depiction known apart from a rough engraving of the early 16th century. Fewer than ten lute-harpsichord makers are known, and there are reasonably detailed descriptions of instruments made by only two or three of them. Nonetheless, the instrument is mentioned fairly frequently in music books of the early 17th to the mid-18th century. Much of the available information relates to three 18th century German instrument makers: Johann Christoph Fleischer of Hamburg, Johann Nicolaus Bach and the organ builder Zacharias Hildebrandt. Fleishcer built two types of instrument. The smaller had two 8-foot gut-stringed stops with a compass of about three octaves; in the lower two octaves these could be coupled with a 4-foot stop, by analogy with the pairs of octave-tuned bass strings (courses) on the lute. Below the soundboard of the instrument an oval resonator in the shape of a shell, resembling the body of a lute was attached.

Extractions: Construction - tonal characteristics - specification It is unlikely that the lightweight, light-sounding almost jangle of the supposedly "authentic" baroque harpsichord would have been heard in Bach's Germany. The German baroque harpsichord was considerably more substantial, both in construction and sound output, with a wider specification including 16' stop, and optionally equipped with a separate, organ-style pedalboard used for domestic organ practice. In Bach's Leipzig, there was an established tradition of Collegia Musica, secular musical organizations run mainly by the students of the city's famed university, and contributing music of the highest quality. In the spring of 1729, Bach took over directorship of the Collegium founded in 1702 by Telemann, its performances given weekly in Zimmermann's Coffee House on the fashionable Catherine Strasse, centrally placed close to the Marktplatz. Himself an enthusiastic amateur musician, Gottfried Zimmerman frequently re-equipped his establishment with the latest musical instruments for use by the Collegium and other musical guests. One of his prize possessions in the late 1720s was "a clavcymbel of large size and range of expressivity" which was a Leipzig attraction in itself. It was replaced by an "even finer instrument" in 1733. The baroque German harpsichord was undoubtedly a substantial and splendid instrument; our illustrations above (1722, Jena, Evening Concert) and right (by Bolcioni, 1627) show that three-manual instruments were by no means unknown.

Extractions: Introduction to the Harpsichord and Clavichord Two types of stringed keyboard instrument were available to the household or court musician from the 16th century to the middle of the 18th: the harpsichord and its near relations, the spinet and virginal; and the clavichord. In the harpsichord family the string is plucked by a small plectrum, originally of quill but nowadays usually Delrin. The variety of sound from these plucked instruments is achieved not primarily by finger pressure, but more subtly by phrasing and articulation. Variety of tonal colour can be obtained, on a harpsichord in particular, by judicious choice of registration. The harpsichord was used both for solo performance and accompanying in chamber groups and in larger ensembles of the period. It typically had two sets of strings per key, tuned either to the same pitch or with one set sounding an octave higher (a 4' register). On later instruments an additional device could be found, called a buff (or sometimes harp) stop to give a pizzicato effect. The registers were controlled by hand stops above the keyboard. Two manuals (keyboards) were to be found on certain larger instruments, which usually featured three sets of strings. The spinet is a smaller, domestic harpsichord normally with one string per note. Having a shorter string length, the strings often run diagonally from the keyboard in order to save space. The virginal (or virginals, the plural being equally correct) also has one string per note but here these run parallel to the keyboard. This useful domestic instrument was more popular than the harpsichord in northern Europe (particularly in England and the Low Countries) in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

This instrument is very closely based on a diminutive "six-foot" Andreas Ruckers harpsichord made in 1640. This is an exquisite, lovely instrument, with the full, penetrating sound found in the best Flemish harpsichords. It is disposed with an 8' choir and a 4' choir, with a split buff stop on the 8'. The range is C-ddd, enough to tackle most of J.S.Bach, for whose music this harpsichord is nearly ideal. The instrument is finished with an enameled exterior, and Flemish printed papers on the interior surfaces. The rack-guided keyboard has boxwood naturals and ebonized oak sharps. Its size and weight (about 40 lbs) make it easily transported. $15,500.00 petite ravalementafter Andreas Ruckers, 1640 Fundamentally the same as my Flemish harpsichord (above), except with an enlarged range of GG-BB-ddd short octave bass. With a single 8' and 4', and a split buff stop, this instrument accommodates a wider library of music without having to re-tune the bass notes. He works in a converted eighteenth century quayside warehouse in the City of Lancaster, England, with two assistants, and personally attends to each stage of the demanding process of making a hand crafted keyboard instrument. In 1977 he won a Churchill Scholarship and travelled to the USA where he studied instruments in the major collections as well as visiting other makers. Due to this opportunity and visits to European collections he has inspected, collected data on, and (where possible) played all the originals of the instruments offered here. The workshop has tended to specialise in instruments from the Flemish, French and North German traditions, as can be seen in the online catalogue. In addition to these instruments, many others have been studied and documented, some copied. We made this choice because the mid-18th century French style harpsichord represents the most successful "general" purpose instrument. The instrument is suitable to all of the harpsichord literature of the baroque. The completed kit rewards the builder with a double-manual instrument of elegant proportion and detail having a range of five octaves, FF-f''' (61 notes). There are three ranks of jacks and three choirs of strings, 2 x 8', 1 x 4', with a buff stop which can be installed on either the back 8' choir or the upper-manual 8'. An additional peau de buffle register with leather plectra can be added to the lower-manual 8' if the builder chooses. The transposing keyboards are replicas of Taskin's keyboards.
