Israelinsider: Views: A Little Light In Hebron But, then again, that s what hanukkah comes to teach us, that a very little bitof light can expel a tremendous amount of darkness. http://web.israelinsider.com/Views/4571.htm
Extractions: We are in the midst of Hanukkah the holiday of lights. Today is also the first day of the new month of Tevet as we say in Hebrew Rosh Hodesh. Hanukkah is generally a happy holiday eight days when we light the menorah, commemorating the miracle of the Maccabees, a minority which overcame a majority of their fellow countrymen and brought about the defeat of the Greeks, the USA of their day. We celebrate the discovery of a small tin of pure olive oil, enough for lighting the Menorah in the Temple for one day, but miraculously lasting for eight days. We observe the victory of true Jewish spirit and culture over that of the Greek empire, a civilization which brought foreign traditions and assimilation to Eretz Yisrael, leading to massive Hellenization of the Jewish people in Israel.

As a second-grade teacher in a public school, that means I start my tightrope walk in about one week. My dilemma is how to teach the concepts of Thanksgiving and the holidays without offending someone. I donât dare actually write the word âChristmas.â I might offend someone. What books should I read? What worksheets should I use? What discussions should I foster? What art projects can I send home? Some argue that I shouldnât be teaching about âChristmasâ or holidays at all. I can argue that holidays are a part of our culture and to pretend they donât exist is to pretend the outside world doesnât affect children. Any child walking into a retail store next week will see holiday decorations hanging from the rooftops. Should I not talk to my Hmong students about the American holidays of Christmas and Thanksgiving? I think it is my duty to expose all the children in my room to many cultures and traditions, including long-standing American ones. The first-grade teachers in my school solve the âChristmasâ problem by teaching a unit titled âHolidays Around the World.â That seems to say itâs all right to teach about Christmas if you include other holidays as well. I wonder if I teach about Kwanzaa and Hanukkah, I can teach the Christmas story, too? It is certainly a question I have never had the courage to pursue.

CONTACT by Judie Haynes The diversity in many classrooms provides a starting point for children to begin to understand and value the many distinct cultures of the world. What better way to do that than to feature a winter unit on light festivals from around the world. Teach your students about the cultural traditions in France, Sweden, Thailand, Philippines, India, Egypt, Holland, and Mexico. More light festivals will be added so keep checking back. When English language learners see their home cultures and languages being studied in the classroom, they feel their culture has been validated. This helps to develop positive self-esteem in culturally and linguistically diverse children. Introduce this unit by having students find out how to say Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's in different languages. According to folk tradition, December 13th follows the longest night of the year in Sweden. During the winter there are only a few hours of sunlight each day. St. Lucia is honored this day with her wreath of candles. The oldest girl in the family is declared St. Lucia on December 13th. Although for several centuries the Rabbis included Judith in their Hanukkah narratives, her story, recorded in the Book of Judith, never made it into the canonized Bible. The Book of Judith promised that her "praise will never depart from the heart of those who remember the power of God," and she acted with a certainty that her legacy would "go down through all generations of our descendants." Neither she nor her contemporaries could have imagined a time when her story, as a story of courage in the face of enormous risks, would cease to be part of the story of the Jewish people passed from one generation to the next. And yet today, Judith's story is a little-known part of the

Extractions: Introduction Background: Religious Liberty in America Prayer in Public School Religion in the Curriculum ... Education Religion in the Public Schools Teaching About Religious Holidays General Rule: Teachers must be careful not to cross the line between teaching about religious holidays (which is permitted) and celebrating religious holidays (which is not). Celebrating religious holidays in the form of religious worship or other practices is unconstitutional. Teaching about a holiday will be constitutional if it furthers a genuine secular program of education, is presented objectively, and does not have the effect of advancing or inhibiting religion. The U. S. Supreme Court has not specifically ruled on this subject. May religious symbols be used as teaching aids in the classroom? Yes. Religious symbols such as crosses, creches and menorahs may be used as teaching aids in the classroom provided that the symbols are displayed as examples of the cultural and religious heritage of the holiday, and are temporary in nature.

The teacher asked Michael, a madrich teenage aide in her second-grade class, to begin a game about ten minutes before each class. In this time, the teacher finished setting up the room and talked to parents when they dropped off their children. The students were so eager to participate in Michaels games that tardiness soon ceased. Because of experiences like these, I strongly recommend having madrichim in your classes. Madrichim programs are important for keeping teenagers involved in religious school. Working as a madrich (boy) or madrichah (girl) can help teens build leadership skills and may even influence them to become teachers when they are older. Some schools allow all interested students to become madrichim; others select eligible students among the 812

A quote or two from the brochure I received yesterday " for teachers" about religious festivals. " Teachers must be alert to the distinction between teaching about religious holidays, which is permissible, and celebrating religious holidays, which is not." " The resolution would seem to be in devising holiday programs that serve an educational purpose for all students - programs that make no students feel excluded or identified with a religion that is not their own." This thing goes ON and ON. I won't bore you all. Added to which, we are an academic magnet school in which exams count for 25% of the semester grade, and we start said exams on Friday the 13th. My school system chose to finish the first semester before the winter break. This means I have to sacrifice a lot of seasonal stuff.
