Extractions: Learning to Hang Glide Hang gliding has come a long way since the early days. Today's hang gliders are carefully designed, safe aircraft, and the pilots understand the air better than ever before. But what about the thrills? Well, some pilots do work up adrenalin in aerobatics or speed gliding, and in August, 2000 a hang glider pilot flew 555km for a new World Record. Others simply enjoy the serenity of floating in a silent sky, or flying with friends. The basic hang glider was pretty much invented by an Australian engineer, John Dickenson, in 1963. He first built a kite based on a NASA Gemini space capsule recovery wing, with all the basic features of today's wings, including the triangular control bar. Australian kite fliers soon introduced Dickenson's design to the rest of the world, and suddenly recreational hang gliding began its boom. FLEX WING hang gliders are the most closely related to the original early 1970's hang gliders. They have a basic tubing frame and a flexible wing made of sailcloth, stiffened into an aerofoil shape by aluminium battens. They are usually wire-braced, and controlled by shifting the pilot weight. "Floaters" are designed for new pilots or for those who want an easy to fly, light, and simple machine. They're great for just getting out and having a great time, no matter what your experience level. "Intermediate" gliders provide better performance for the advancing pilot, but are a little heavier and require more skill. "Advanced" wings tend to be heavier still, with excellent performance, but require extra pilot skill and judgement to fly safely. Many of the most recent advanced wings use cantilever composite structure, and use advanced aerodynamics.

Extractions: The National Forest Service in Southern California is in the lengthy process of updating the "Forest Plan". The four Forests from Big Sur to San Diego; the Los Padres, Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland National Forests are updating their plan simultaneously. The Forest Service planers are asking for input from Forest users during this long process, and with a majority of our flying sites on Forest Service lands, this is a great opportunity for us to strengthen our relationship with the Forest Service and get our sport "written in" as one of the appropriate activities. Recently the Forest Service published a "Notice of intent" Proposed Action (NOI). The NOI is a draft or their management plan. They have Hang Gliding listed as one of the appropriate recreational activities for motorized areas within the "Recreation Opportunity Spectrum" (ROS) classes. Thanks to all those pilots whose comments got us listed!
Extractions: As seen in: By ANTONIO A. PRADO e-mail: aprado@newspress.com NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITER Colorful hang gliders and paragliders floating through Santa Barbara's picturesque skies have long been a familiar sight. Despite public fascination with the flyers, however, it is illegal for them to land their craft at city parks and beaches. That may soon change. City parks and recreation commissioners unanimously endorsed a plan Wednesday to allow hang glider and paraglider landings at Parma Park and East Beach. The plan must next be considered by the City Council's Ordinance Committee, then return to commissioners for a final review before being sent the full council for approval. "We are very, very excited about having gotten to this point," said Dr. Glenn E. Miller, a past president of the Santa Barbara Soaring Association and chairman of the group's Site Preservation Committee. "It's been a long and arduous process." The proposed change would mark a turnaround in the city's legal view of the daredevil sport.

Extractions: A Pilot Resource > All About Hang Gliding > FAQs on getting started Hang Gliding What is hang gliding, what is a hang glider? Is hang gliding the same as parasailing, parachuting? How is hang gliding different from paragliding? What can you do with a hang glider? ... What should you look for when signing up for a lesson? What is hang gliding, what is a hang glider? Hang gliding is one of the simplest forms of human flight. A hang glider is a non-motorized, foot-launched wing. A Hang glider has a rigid frame maintaining the shape of the wing, with the pilot usually flying in a prone position. The hang glider wing is constructed of rip-stop nylon or mylar over an aluminum frame. Hang gliders are controlled by shifting the pilot's weight with respect to the glider. Pilots are suspended from a strap connected to the glider's frame (hence the name "hang" glider). By moving forward and backward and side to side at the end of this strap, the pilot alters the center of gravity of the glider. This then causes the glider to pitch or roll in the direction of the pilot's motion and thus allows both speed control and turning. With a hang glider, you can fly like a bird, soaring upwards on currents of air. Hang gliders routinely stay aloft for 3 hours or more, climb to elevations of 15,000', and go cross-country for vast distances.

Extractions: Aviation and aeronautics are terms that refer to the development and operation of vehicles that are known as aircraft because they are either lighter or heavier than the air. Among the lighter-than-air vehicles are balloons and airships that are powered by helium, methane, hydrogen, or hot air. These aircraft are mostly flown today for recreational and competitive purposes. Heavier-than-air vehicles include gliders, helicopters, airplanes, and homebuilt and ultralight aircraft. These aircraft are used for military, business, and commercial purposes as well as for various air shows and racing competitions throughout the world. Now known as the "Recreational Hang Gliding Capital of the World" - Chelan draws pilots every summer from around the world to fly the rising thermals of North Central Washington. This is an extreme sport which requires extensive training, but for the interested visitor, a trip to the Chelan Sky Park on top of the Butte is well worth the drive. Visitors to the top of the Butte are often amazed to learn these pilots have flown all the way into Canada from Chelan and that 100-mile flights are not uncommon over the flat wheat fields of eastern Washington. This past July, one pilot flew 155 miles before landing. How to get there
