Extractions: I LOVE this workbook for teaching handwriting! I used Handwriting Without Tears and Calvert for my older children, but I like Happy Handwriting even better. I am using this with my 5 yr old and plan to use it with my 4 yr old when he is ready. We do 1 lesson a day. It is very relaxed, fun and my daughter really enjoys it. I love the little bible verse on each page that has the child circle the letter being learned that day. The website for this workbook is www.masterypublications.com. They also have a cursive workbook called "Cheerful Cursive". I'm putting this review here to spread the word, because I don't hear about this curriculum much, but it is so great (and inexpensive too!). Best of all, it works! No planning or extra work for parents, and enjoyable, quick lessons for the children. Pentime handwriting workbooks were designed for use in one room Amish schools. They have one page of instruction and a facing page of copywork of stuff like wildlife tidbits, state information, etc. My dc work alone through these pretty much. I paid less than $4 each for them, making them a great value.

Order it from Amazon.com's online bookstore or from her site at http://www.BFHhandwriting.com . From Nan's site you can also order her BEGINNERS' HANDWRITING, designed for younger children and others who can benefit from large-scale fluent models and motoric exercises for handwriting development. The large-scale, large motor, "arm's length" exercises in BEGINNERS' HANDWRITING develop a good foundation for later handwriting progress in any style. Nan developed her teaching method during more than 20 years of experience working in elementary school classrooms and also tutoring/remediating older learners. Observing the motor skills of young children enabled Nan to formulate methods that allow children to write at maximum speed with maximum legibility.

Extractions: Submitted by: Dianne Paul, 1-2 Blended Teacher Activity to practice beginning handwriting skills. Materials: Plan: After talking about all of our names and how important it is to have names on things and be able to read each others names, we talk about our friends in our class. We talk about coming to school and using the bus. Then we have the children begin their writing career in first grade by writing children's names on the bus by the windows and drawing the faces in the windows. They may also want to put the stop sign that the bus has, or the number, or the district name, on the bus, whatever the children see on the buses that pick them up.

Homeschool In The LINK Peterson handwriting Using Rhythm to Improve Written Language Fluency. by Randy Nelson A directed lesson is key to teaching children how to move. http://www.homeschoolnewslink.com/v7i6_peterson.html
Extractions: Peterson Handwriting: Using Rhythm to Improve Written Language Fluency by Randy Nelson A lot of parents recognize that it is very difficult for their child to put thoughts onto paper. It is a noted failure of mainstream education. The last NAEP Report showed that only about 25% of grade eight students were able to compose written answers proficiently. If your child and student is having problems with the process of writing, you may be falling into the same trap that causes classroom teachers to rely upon failed teaching strategy year after year. Apathy and a lack of knowledge combine to prevent important learning for many children - learning that real research has shown to be so basic as to affect how the childs brain functions to process symbolic language. Have you read recent news articles on brain scan research showing that children with reading problems are using fewer and different areas of the brain than are good readers? Despite the fact that children show a strong desire to learn, apathy regarding handwriting skill has been steadily increasing for decades. The introduction of personal computers contributed to the idea that handwriting was no longer important and priority for skill instruction in our schools has been systematically reduced over the last thirty years. It is ironic that during the same period of time, constantly improving technology allowed science to identify powerful reasons to give a high priority to motor learning. For several reasons, education failed to see handwriting instruction as motor learning:
