Extractions: Practical life is the area of the classroom where children learn coordination, confidence, cooperation, independence, and order. These activities include care of self, care of the environment, and physical skills. Care-of-self activities include handwashing, snack preparation, and dressing activities. These activities help the young child gain confidence in him/herself. Care-of-the-environment activities can include plant and animal care, as well as cleaning activities. Sweeping, scrubbing, and polishing all help children learn the importance of order. If steps are done incorrectly, the results can be less than desirable. The area of practical life called "physical skills" incorporates numerous activities. Here children work on pouring, scooping, twisting, lacing, squeezing and pounding just to name a few of the activities. These activities are great for learning coordination skills. The small motor skills are a prerequisite for developing strong capable hands that will be needed for writing activities. The activities in physical skills will vary and meet all abilities and age levels. Let's take a look at "lacing" as one such activity:

It also gives suggestions for teaching handwriting What to Look for in a Handwriting Program: Many children with Down syndrome are able to learn to write in time. It is important to be consistent, teach carefully, and establish good habits from the beginning. Equally important is establishing a good attitude toward handwriting time. Extractions: Handwriting is a complex skill that is not often taught directly. It is not unusual for some students with disabilities to have difficulty with handwriting. These students may also have sensory integration problems. Handwriting Club is a format that provides direct instruction in handwriting combined with sensory integration activities. This article describes all the steps and materials necessary to organize and conduct a handwriting club. Hand writing was a subject that I didn't believe I had time to teach. As a teacher of students with behavior disorders and learning disabilities, I felt more responsible for teaching the basic skills. I did not have time to "do" handwriting. Then last year another teacher in my building told me about the Handwriting Club she had conducted at a school where she previously taught. The club met for a few weeks with the teacher and the occupational therapist (OT) and incorporated sensory activities with handwriting instruction. I was interested because I had begun working on some sensory integration activities using the

Easy strategies and activities to help children of all learning styles practice and perfect their handwriting Row upon row of wobbly, cursive lowercase w's were spread across Matty's paper, like pointy waves in an ocean of blue lines. The rips and smears of repeated erasing were all too visible. As I looked over his work, I made notes on his progress: "Matty responds well to an active, bands-on approach. He is a tactile learner who seems to enjoy experiencing new things in the classroom." What Matty clearly did not enjoy was practicing the new cursive letter forms. Laboring to fill his page with "perfect" letters left him restless, frustrated, and unsuccessful. He needed a different approach.

Extractions: (UQELF Classroom Activities) I write to introduce an accompaniment to the recently published UQELF Support Programme. As you may know, the UQELF Support Programme is an innovative prevention intervention programme for boosting the literacy skills of selected year 1 and year 2 students. Designed and written by speech and language pathologists and occupational therapists, it develops both the phonological awareness necessary for the development of reading and spelling, as well as the motor, sensory and postural skills underlying handwriting, cutting and other essential school skills. The UQELF Support Programme is an intensive programme, involving explicit teaching of key skills to support literacy. It was designed for use with selected children, withdrawn from the class and taught in small groups. However, the authors recognised that it would be ideal if these concepts could be reinforced and experienced in the regular classroom setting, at the same time as they are being learnt intensively in groups. Thus the authors developed UQELF Classroom Activities, a series of fun 10 minute literacy activities for the whole class.

Individually, both works offer interesting insights into the use of technology as a means of overcoming difficulties in handwriting. Featured together, they offer some outstanding possibilities for action research on assessment and interventions. The following information, presented in a question and answer format, offers a few words of introduction by the authors concerning their work. Readers interested in using these materials as part of their own action research activities are encouraged to contact the authors for additional information. A: We created our informal assessment because we saw that there was really no information-gathering instrument examining handwriting ability and computer needs for purposes of graphic output. The definition of graphic output is anything that takes the place of pen or pencil. So often, graphic output is a critical issue, particularly when looking at assistive technology.

Extractions: Handwriting Without Tears instruction can easily fit into the day of any teacher. The program encourages teachers to spend 10 minutes per day instructing handwriting, then recommends allowing the children 5 minutes of practice time with the new skills that have been introduced. With the short 5-minute practice sessions children remain excited, alert and eager to come back for more. Since HWT is set up for children to build on the skills that they have mastered, new letters are immediately put into words. Eventually, the words are put into sentences, and the children are continuously using the letters previously learned, thus developing proficiency in handwriting. Handwriting instruction can take place during a time that has been singled out for "handwriting", during Language Arts time, and even during math instruction when working on the formation of numbers. Many Kindergarten teachers begin the day with handwriting instruction so that the new letter / stroke / word / number that is being taught, can be used throughout the day, again, developing proficiency in handwriting.

With the short 5-minute practice sessions children remain excited, alert and eager to come back for more. A new skill is usually taught in the third grade - cursive handwriting! HWT recommends waiting until third grade to teach cursive. The children have better eye-hand coordination skills and the skill is easier for them to learn at this age. Since HWT is set up for children to build on the skills that they have mastered, new letters are immediately put into words. Eventually, the words are put into sentences, and the children are continuously using the letters previously learned, thus developing proficiency in handwriting.
