Extractions: Do you ever wonder why so many intermediate grade students revert to printwriting? Or, why your best students are so frustrated by written assignments? The answer is found in new research on fluent movement. Virtually anyone can write fluently. However, when legibility is a requirement, things change dramatically. A little experience in an intermediate classroom will provide a teacher with ample evidence that far too many of our students need far too much time to write neatly. If students could write fluently, and produce legible work in the process, it would be much easier to accomplish the objectives found in the written curriculum. But in our classrooms, it usually comes down to choices. If you want to read student work easily, you must choose between teaching time and working time. Give students enough time to produce legible work and you find that there is not enough time to teach everything. Experienced teachers have found that time spent on practice activities in handwriting workbooks makes little difference. The question is, "Can I really do anything to help pupils develop the skill needed for fluent legibility?" The answer is YES! Many scientific studies offer information regarding the learning of and application of movement. While there is much to be learned, current studies provide us with potent information which directly applies to classroom teaching methods.

Extractions: Children explore the environment by moving and interacting with it. By manipulating objects and gathering valuable information about the physical characteristics, this eventually provides perceptual information necessary to make future judgments without the need for physical contact. Through a matching of perceptual and motor information, a child can interpret the characteristics of the environment more efficiently. Young children at school spend approximately 60%-70% of their time completing fine-motor work or activities. Approximately 12% of children experience difficulties in this area. Proficiency in fine-motor control allows the child to develop skills that will have consequences immediately and in later life. Social Consequences . You cannot hide the way you move. Simple tasks such as tying laces or handling any utensils or objects can cause frustration and embarrassment. The child who has poor coordination begins to wonder why something that is natural and taken for granted is so difficult to perform.

Make certain that your child follows the arrows (or writes in the correct direction) when forming letters. Be certain that you supervise your child because it is very difficult to un-teach something that your child has taught himself to do the wrong way. Some children can't decide which hand to write with. Please do not fret over that, let him decide which hand he will write with that day. Some-day he will settle on his preferred hand. After your child can remember how to form the letters and do it reasonably well, you should have handwriting classes as needed and you will decide that based on how well your child is doing. You will know that your child is doing well.... When all of the short lower case letters are of the same height.

After all the letter formations had been taught I used a "minute test" for speed and accuracy continuing practice. It was quick and really got kids looking at their writing. Alphabet letters where on a master with spaces between for trace and copy. Kids were timed for one minute of trace and copy then went back to look for their worst letter of the day, and crossed it out and circled the best. Then they counted the number done, not counting any that really didn't look right and charted them. Occasionally I had the kids switch papers and check each others work and talk about why they did or didn't count certain letters. It kept them a little more focused on what others could read. We talked about writing as a way to communicate, not just for yourself and others needed to be able to read it.
