February 22, 2004 Though often futile, speaking truth to power can be therapeutic. Here's a copy of a letter I sent out to about 200 corporate lackeys regarding the crisis in Haiti. Some of the main addresses are at the bottom of the letter, for ease of clipping and pasting, if one is so inclined as to send their own letter... February 17, 2004 To the Government of Canada and Canadas corporate-owned media, I am writing to you concerning the escalating crisis that is unfolding in Haiti, where the world is witnessing the attempted violent overthrow of a democratically elected leader, Jean Bertrand Aristide. By tacitly supporting an opposition that has repeatedly refused to negotiate peacefully with President Aristide, the Canadian government is effectively supporting this attempted coup detat. From a rational perspective this is unacceptable for several reasons, explored below. It is also unacceptable that the corporate news agencies are refusing to provide objective coverage of these harmful events, and are thereby also effectively supporting the attempted coup detat. On January 13, 2004, speaking from Monterrey, Mexico at the Special Summit of the Americas, Paul Martin committed to help mediate a solution to the crisis in Haiti, which has since seen at least 60 people brutally murdered, and promises to soon see more in the absence of concrete efforts toward this professed end by Paul Martins government.

Introduction: The Birth of a Big Surprise If human rights regimes confirmed the dictum of the Modernist Movement in architecture"Form follows Function"then, anatomically speaking, the Inter-American one should resemble the European about as much as the unicorn resembles the ox. By associating the European regime with an ox, I intend not to insult but rather to celebrate its solid bourgeois virtues: the stolid, efficient application of energy and the consequently consistent production of effective decisions, all within the context of an orderly, stable, and prosperous community. The post-war West European setting did not invite, nor did it require, unpredictable improvisation or heroic challenges to the expectations and desires of governing elites. Latin America, by comparison, has been a feral jungle for most of the Inter-American regime's remarkable life. And although today most of the beasts have withdrawn to their lairs (when they are not off exercising their human right to visit Miami and shop at Gucci) passersby still see eyes gleaming angrily in the shadows and hear the tense scrape of claws across stony floors.

It was organized "to strengthen free institutions at home and abroad." Freedom House also serves as a clearinghouse and research and document center on issues concerning civil liberties and political rights. (2) Its publications discuss the state of "freedom" in countries across the world, but the bulk of its studies and projects seem to concern political environments in Marxist regimes. In 1987, for example, 10 of the 16 conferences organized by Freedom House focused on the Eastern bloc and the Soviet Union. Two more targeted Nicaragua. (16) Freedom House conducts a variety of projects, primarily aimed at measuring or promoting political rights and civil liberties in countries around the world. (38,19) The definition of political rights used for the group's annual worldwide Comparative Survey of Freedom revolves arounds an individual's rights to "participate meaningfully in the political process." It is primarily an electoral definition of political rights and includes such criteria as the holding of regular elections, the presence and number of opposition parties, size of the opposition vote, regular and/or recent transfers of power, fairness and openness of the campaign environment, and so on. Other political issues which are considered include the amount of military influence on government and the degree of foreign involvement, each of whichaccording to Raymond Gastilare measured conservatively. A special section on the conference's Opening Plenary entitled "Emergency action plan to fight back against the FBI and Ashcroft" featured Mara Verheyden-Hilliard and Carl Messineo, attorneys and co-founders of the Partnership for Civil Justice. "Today we have launched a national fightback movement to stop John Ashcroft and the FBI from bringing back the very worst features from J. Edgar Hoover's reign over domestic intelligence," stated Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, also a member of the A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition steering committee. "Ashcroft's changes have been presented as an innocuous update of FBI procedures," said Verheyden-Hilliard. "This has become the preferred method of presentation by Ashcroft as the Justice Department shreds the First Amendment and the Bill of Rights.
