Its mountains stand majestically looking down upon sandy beaches and green valleys. From afar it appears as any other island one might encounter sailing the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Yet, as we draw closer we notice a difference. There are no tourist resorts dotting the coasts, no high rise hotels with sand volleyball courts and marimba bands. This is Haiti, this is different. If the land could speak it would tell of tragedy and violence, of abuse and bloodshed, of power and greed. Why does the country stand apart from its neighbors? The answer lies in the turbulent history of this tiny nation. The Early Years Christopher Columbus landed on the tiny island he called, "La isla espanola" in December 1492 (The name was later shortened to Hispanola). The island was inhabited by local Arawak Indians who referred to their home as "Hayti", or mountainous land. In keeping with imperialistic ideology, the Spaniards used and abused the native Arawaks to the point of near extinction.

Haitian writer Edwidge Danticat is explaining why America—a country which can help, if anybody can Nobel laureate Derek Walcott said on Sunday—has never offered positive help to Haiti. “The US does have the ability to help, to build institutions,” Danticat agrees, “it is a matter of will.” That “will” on the part of the US has never been made apparent. Not 200 years ago when Haiti successfully fought off the French and declared itself independent nor with its current intervention. “Two hundred years ago, the US, they didn’t want to acknowledge Haiti’s independence. Now, their intervention is to stop the flow of people coming to Miami/Florida,” Danticat says. “The Duvaliers were openly funded by the US on the basis that they were not communist. America helps when it serves its interest to do so.” Danticat is in Trinidad for the Haitian Bicentenary Conference—Reinterpreting the Haitian Revolution and its Cultural Aftershocks—at UWI, St Augustine that kicked off at the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) yesterday. Tonight she will read from her works at the LRC.

A turn down one path, and Haiti might have become a thriving democracy. A turn down another path, and the United States might have been just a small neighbor of the French Empire. If it hadn't been for the success of the Haitian revolution, the United States might never have extended beyond the Mississippi River. Had not the United States turned its back on Haiti, that nation might have thrived. What did happen is this: The colony called St. Domingue was France's most valuable overseas possession, producing fortunes in sugar, tobacco, coffee and other products for European markets and French profits. The cash register rang until enslaved people revolted in 1791 and, after years of warfare, gained control of the entire island in 1794. Toussaint L'Ouverture led the revolution, the second successful revolution in the Americas, and began creating a multiracial society of free white and black people. President John Adams recognized the rebel government and even sent U.S. frigates as a show of support. But Adams had just lost the election of 1800 to Thomas Jefferson, who reversed the U.S. stand as soon as he took office in 1801.

Wisdom and Beauty in Haitian Vodou The spiritual splendor we are plunged into through this fascinating exhibit defies and calls into question the sordid and negative image imprinted on Haiti’s traditional religion. The compelling feeling of ecstasy, piety, of profound communion with the beyond which pervades these masterpieces not only lifts the mind and vibrates the soul, but also suggests that such marvelous inspiration could not have come from a destructive power. What then explains the hostility towards Vodou? The plight of Vodou in Haiti originates from the socio- economic conditions created by the colonizers to enrich themselves at the expense and to the detriment of the Negro slaves. As you know, political supremacy works hand in hand with cultural and spiritual supremacy. So, to insure their power, impose their values and establish their so-called superiority, the European rulers, from the 16th to the 19th century, made it their goal to strip the Blacks of their identity, of their humanity, undermine the African image and destroy African culture. Vodou as the religion of the slaves, the element of cohesion among them and their base of resistance, became a major target and suffered endless persecution. This persistent harassment had an impact which never totally disappeared. No wonder the media have been led to misrepresent Vodou as evil, barbaric, criminal.

Susan, already experienced in directing small nonprofit organizations, caught hold of the dream. Eight months later, the combined efforts of Jeff, Susan, and a core of 12 other volunteer rehabilitation professionals and support personnel had raised over $70,000 in cash and in kind donations. The group then packed their materials together and traveled to Port-au-Prince for 10 days in August of 1998. Upon arrival in Port-au-Prince in August of 1998, a portion of the team worked at a school for the disabled where deaf students were learning to make artificial limbs. Another portion of the team worked with a Haitian nurse, recently returned from education in the US and Canada, who was struggling to operate a home for handicapped children whom she found abandoned by the state hospital. A third part of the team worked with a nurse in Les Cayes who spent her evenings and all her vacation time training student nurses even though her school was destroyed by arson in a period of government unrest.

I have posted a letter from the American Ambassador in 1979 as a confirmation of my sincere devotion to producing a film titled, “The Birth of a King.” A film based on Haiti’s Independence from France, the second oldest Republic in the Western Hemisphere. In the year 2004 Haiti will celebrate its 200th year of Independence it would be fitting and timely to begin production on this historic classical, entertaining epic film, the sequel of “Gone With the Wind.” One of the Heros’s in my film King Christophe fought side by side with American Founder George Washington with two hundred Haitian soldiers General Christophe later became King of Haiti. click here for letters and poems The Author of the screenplay, "The Birth of a King," Anthony Dessalines has spent the past 27 years of his life endeavoring to produce an Epic Film. A film based on a Revolution for Independence of a country formerly called Hispanola, presently known as Haiti and The Dominican Republic. Napoleon's Army was defeated on that Island and France lost one of its wealthiest colonies, in 1804. In 1976 I had the opportunity to visit Haiti and The Dominican Republic, which came about in a very unusual way. While there I saw the ruins of Christophe's Palace, and the fortress called the Citadel, which remains intact. Upon returning to the United States after three month there, I began extensive research on Hispanola under French colonization. I researched The Archives of France, and numerous states in the United States. I obtained a lot of letters and documents written by Napoleon, Toussaint, Dessalines, and other players involved in that particular period of history. I accumulated sufficient amounts of information to write the screenplay I have titled "The Birth of a King." I sincerely believe this unique historical event is a story that needs to be told on the Silver Screen.
