The Geography Of Haiti THE BASIC geography OF haiti AND MAJOR CITIES AND ATTRACTIONS. Bob Corbett August 1999. I want to begin with a map of haiti and make some comments on it. http://www.webster.edu/~corbetre/haiti/history/course/unittwo/geography.htm
Extractions: August 1999 I want to begin with a map of Haiti and make some comments on it. The map that I'm point at is found on all of the main Haiti pages of my web site. However, you will need to click on it once you get it up to bring it to full size. If you have two browsers (a wonderful thing to have and they are free) I'd recommend you keep this essay up on one and bring the map up on another, then you can easily click back and forth between them. Haiti is the most mountainous country of the Caribbean, however it does have three plains which were once quite fertile. It also has four mountain chains. I want to try to give you some idea where the mountain chains are and where the plains are. Let's start at the top of the map and find the name of the second largest town in Haiti, Cap Haitien. If one were to draw a line straight down to the C of Cap, and then draw the line in a very gradual sloping to the right all the way to the Dominican Republic border (that's the brown land mass on the right), then this line should intersect the border parallel to the word Gonaives on the map. If you have this small box drawn, then the famous NORTHERN PLAIN is what is above the line to the sea.

Extractions: Country List World Factbook Home The World Factbook Haiti Introduction Haiti Background: The native Arawak Amerindians - who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by Columbus in 1492 - were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years. In the early 17th century, the French established a presence on Hispaniola, and in 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island - Haiti. The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean, but only through the heavy importation of African slaves and considerable environmental degradation. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'OUVERTURE and after a prolonged struggle, became the first black republic to declare its independence in 1804. Haiti has been plagued by political violence for most of its history. It is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Extractions: Current Issues ... Chinese New Years Haiti is located in the Caribbean Sea and contains spectacular mountains and a beautiful, undeveloped coastline. Located on the Hispaniola Island, Haiti shares the island with another nation, the Dominican Republic. Haiti occupies the western third of the island. The island of Hispaniola lies between Cuba and Puerto Rico in the West Indies. The tropical climate of Haiti provides summers which are very hot with a high humidity. There is an area in the east, though, which is semi-arid due to the mountains which cut off the trade winds which carry the humidity to the rest of the island. Haiti has a rough terrain which is very mountainous. There is very little fertile farmland and only a few areas have irrigation. Haiti is located in the middle of the hurricane belt and from June to October the nation often experiences severe storms. There are also periods of drought throughout the year and flooding and earthquakes both pose serious issues to the inhabitants of this small but populous country.
