    Extractions: A succession of military governments followed before Haiti began the transition to civilian rule. Presidential elections were held in mid-December 1990 under the supervision of the United Nations and brought to the presidency the radical priest Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Nine months later, army chief Brigadier-General Raoul Cedras seized power in a military coup. Aristide was exiled. In June 1992, the army installed a civilian government under Marc Bazin, one of the conservative presidential candidates defeated by Aristide. 12 months later, as the country suffered under the weight of international opprobrium, a deal between the Cedras/Bazin regime and Aristide allowed the latter to come back to the country. Political violence, orchestrated by a right-wing militia known as the In 2003 a wave of protests against Aristide quickly spread throughout the country plunging Haiti into chaos. By 2004, armed rebels had seized control of many towns and violence spread across the island. In February 2004, Aristide fled the country and now lives in exile in South Africa. Drug traffiking and corruption are major problems hampering the restoration of the country.

It began in Haiti in the ethnic 'melting pot' created by French colonial slavery when Africans of many different lineages were forcefully transported to become agricultural slaves in this new land. The indigenous Haitian Taino and Arawak peoples had already been largely exterminated during the earlier Spanish invasion, yet much of their culture and traditions remained and these, too, were incorporated into the African beliefs. Europeans, including pro-Stuart Scottish deportees, also came to settle in Haiti and their beliefs, also, were absorbed. The result was a broad mix of many different African, indigenous Haitian and even European pre-Christian traditions which, through a process of evolution and syncretisation, became blended and formalised to create a religion which encompassed them all.

It is a country of almost eleven thousand square miles with a population of about seven million people. The population consists about 95% African descent and 5% mulatto and European descent. The majority of people, about 80% are Catholic, 16% Protestant (an estimated 50% of Haitians also practice voodoo). Unfortunately, Haiti has the lowest standard of living in the Western Hemisphere. This is due in large measure to the political instability of the country. This has resulted in a brain drain as well an economic drain from the country. This in turn has led to foreign governments issuing warnings to their citizens, about the potential dangers of traveling in the major cities like Port-au-Prince, Cap Haitien and the northwestern province. The major industries in the country are sugar refining, cement, textiles and tourism.

Men were primarily responsible for farming and, particularly, for heavy work, such as tilling. Women, often assisted with tasks such as weeding and harvesting. Women were responsible for selling agricultural produce. Haiti's culture valued women's economic contribution to the farm in that all income generated through agricultural production belonged to both husband and wife. Many women also acquired sufficient capital to become full-time market traders, and they were thus economically independent. The income that they earned from nonfarm business activities was recognized as their own; they were not required to share it with their husbands. Family life among the orthodox elite was substantially different from that of the lower class. Civil and religious marriages were the norm, and the "best" families could trace legally married ancestors to the nineteenth century. Because of the importance of intermarriage, mulatto elite families were often interrelated. Marital relationships have changed somewhat since the mid-twentieth century. Divorce, once rare, has become acceptable. Elite wives, once exclusively homemakers surrounded by servants, entered the labor force in increasing numbers in the 1970s and the 1980s. The legal rights of married women, including rights to property, were expanded through legislation in the 1980s. In addition, the elite had a broader choice of partners as economic change and immigration changed the composition of that group.

What then explains the hostility towards Vodou? The plight of Vodou in Haiti originates from the socio- economic conditions created by the colonizers to enrich themselves at the expense and to the detriment of the Negro slaves. As you know, political supremacy works hand in hand with cultural and spiritual supremacy. So, to insure their power, impose their values and establish their so-called superiority, the European rulers, from the 16th to the 19th century, made it their goal to strip the Blacks of their identity, of their humanity, undermine the African image and destroy African culture. Vodou as the religion of the slaves, the element of cohesion among them and their base of resistance, became a major target and suffered endless persecution. This persistent harassment had an impact which never totally disappeared. No wonder the media have been led to misrepresent Vodou as evil, barbaric, criminal.
