Extractions: Occasionally Whiny. Often Cheesy. A Toast To The Trivial Things Of Life! Main Yes, I finally finished Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina so no, that book graphic for AK off to the right was not a permanent fixture on . I even finished it a whole week ahead of Oprah's schedule (it is a good thing, her schedule kept me motivated to keep plugging away). With the Olympics, I fell off the wagon a bit...but a late reading surge still kept me ahead of the September 3rd "finish" date. I have to say that overall AK was a pretty good reading experience. It was far more readable and easy to follow than I ever would have imagined. Sure the names got confusing (especially when a character can be called 3 or 4 different ways), but over the 800 pages you have more than enough time to figure it all out. There were slow parts for sure. I would imagine everyone has their own favorite sub-plot and when it takes 50-75 pages to get back to it things can drag on a bit. But overall it was quite entertaining - as I mentioned in my earliest AK-related post it at times resembled a 19th-century Russian version of Melrose Place (realize I just aged myself with that reference... should I have said

Extractions: Supporters of the Schindlers accused the courts of infringing on Schiavo's religious freedom, saying, as they have often before, that "God's law should supersede man's law." "What court really has the authority to tell someone they can't have a religious rite?" said Paul O'Donnell, a Franciscan friar who has been a constant presence at the side of Schiavo's mother, Mary Schindler. ( Schindler spoke on a street that runs past small shops and leads to a fenced trailer park. The heavy security presence is complicating life, and death, for hospice residents and their families. A woman told CNN that a slow security checkpoint kept her from being at her grandfather's side when he died this week. An elementary school next to the hospice is temporarily closing and sending its students to other schools because of concerns about buses navigating the narrow, clogged street. Frustration was beginning to show. A van slowed as it passed the media clump Tuesday afternoon. The sign in its window said: "Our children can't go to school because of you. Go home!" ( Operation Rescue founder Randall Terry , a spokesman for Schiavo's parents, said the Schindlers have not requested an autopsy and prefer not to talk about the procedure because they are still hoping for a last-minute miracle to keep their daughter alive. Instead, Terry said, the family wants her to be examined to determine whether Michael Schiavo attacked her. Terry called the autopsy "a way to cover [Michael Schiavo's] behind." (

Extractions: avast! ay reckon this delightful day, shiver me timbers, ought not quench itself w'out a tad recollectin' on the travails of past breth'ren attuned, as 'twere, t'th'circumstances o'th'day: [O]n August 28, 1722, a hurricane hit the island [of Jamaica] at half past eight in the morning. According to Captain Chaloner Ogle of HMS Swallow , who was at anchor off Port Royal, there was "as much wind in my opinion as could possibly blow out of the heavens ... all the merchantmen in the harbour foundered or drove ashore ecepting one sloop." The seas threw up rocks and stones and flooded the town to a depth of five feet. The pirate Edward Low was heading for the Leeward Islands in a brigantine when the same hurricane swept across his path. Mountainous waves threatened to overcome them, and the crew was forced to thrown overboard six of their guns, their provisions, and all their heavy goods to lighten the vesel. For hours they words the pumps and used buckets to bail out the water. They debated whether ot cut away the masts but decided against this and instead rigged preventer shrouds to secure the mainmast "and lay to upon the other tack, till the storm was over." The schooner which was sailing in company with the brigantine had her mainsail split by the force of the wind and her crew had to cut away the anchors at her bows, but otherwise she came through the storm unscathed.
