Extractions: There is Nothing Funny About Law School Main I should be watching the convention, but for some reason I just feel better watching the first episode of The West Wing: Season 5 , which just started showing on Bravo. o/~Dee-Dum-Doo~/o August 30, 2004 at 06:10 PM Permalink Comments (10) TrackBack (0) I am currently reading through the Thomson/West Nutshell on Law and Economics. I generally appreciate the Nutshell series, because the books are a nice refresher/primer on broad subjects, especially something like Law and Econ which I'm about to have rammed down my throat in a very uncomfortable way. But this particular volume is rife with typographical errors. I've just discovered four on the same page. It's to the point that most chapters are sounding more and more like they were written by a non-English speaker . . . like, a zebra with a typewriter. Zebras suck. August 29, 2004 at 11:33 AM Permalink Comments (8) TrackBack (0) This is important. For the past four months, I've heard grumblings about the fact that the incoming 1L class at UT Law is 60/40, guys to girls. The usual split is 50/50, but some quirk of the admissions process has produced a class with 100 guys that can't get a date. I thought this was hilarious, and have been making comparisons to the millions of unmarriageable males in certain large Asian countries, but apparently this is not an isolated phenomenon. Today, I got this mail from a dear friend who's starting his 1L year at UVA:

Extractions: My Uncles Funeral was nice, he had a wicker (though more like bamboo) coffin as its more biodegrable. He was then buried in a special part of the cemetary where instead of headstones you have a tree of your choice, I think he has a Copper Birch. I think its a really nice way to do it actually, though personally I would be wanting more of a cremation, then my ashes placed in a metal cylinder and the cylinder being dropped off the side of a boat at sea. But thats me ;) Spent a few days up at my Aunts just getting things sorted out for her. Then we drove back home on Sunday, getting back around 6pm cause there was an accident on the A120 between Stansted and Takely, took a while, engine off and everything, nothing was moving at all. Finally the police came along and told everyone to turn around and go back up to Stansted and try to get where they were going from there. We ended up taking a sort of weird back route, but it was interesting enough. Got back home and the new case for Allhope had arrived along with the new CDROM drive. So I took Allhope down at about 2330 and moved it into the new case with the new cd rom drive, and put it back, turned it on and except for needing to tell the BIOS that there was no longer any floppy drive attached it all went fine.

Extractions: Go straight to the Evil Ending More Dirt From Bear Headquarters What Could Be Next? With the victory at storied St. Andrews in the 2000 British Open, Tiger Woods has done something that only five men before him have done, win all of the Grand Slam golf events in a career. More astounding is the fact that Woods has done it all by the age of 24, by far the youngest person ever to do so. Woods himself was very low-key as usual, saying that he will continue to work on his game. Yes, work on a game that has made him the number 1 golfer in the world. This kind of drive we havent seen since a guy named Jordan. Woods wants to win every tournament, and has done so some 27% of very tournament he enters. Ordinarily, we would scoff at someone "hitting .270" but think about that. With all of the different courses, all of the good players and different weather conditions, this guy wins almost 30% of the time. It is remarkable! Now, at the "ripe old age" of 24, where do you go from here? Once you have reached the top of the mountain, whats next? Yes, Michael Jordan won six titles, but he suffered through quite a few losing seasons and a number of playoff losses before his Bulls broke through. Bjorn Borg walked away from competitive tennis at the age of 27, because he was burned out. Many gymnasts peak at a very young age, and lose their focus once they have reached the pinnacle of their profession. Will this happen to Woods? Its possible. He has been playing golf since he could walk and one doesnt know how much guff his father has given Tiger over the years. However, Woods is older than a lot of young athletes and has been to college and away from his folks; maybe he wont burn out too soon.

Of course you have. That's what Station Break with Paul Farhi is here for. Local stations, cable, radio shows, commercials they're all fair game. Farhi is on assignment to The Post's National desk covering the presidential campaign. He was formerly a reporter in the Post's Style section, writing about media and popular culture. He's been watching TV and listening to the radio since "The Monkees" were in first run and Adam West was a star. Born in Brooklyn and raised in Los Angeles, Farhi had brief stints in the movie business (as an usher at the Picwood Theater), and in the auto industry (rental-car lot guy) before devoting himself fulltime to word processing. His car has 15 radio pre-sets and his cable system has 75 channels. He vows to use all of them for good instead of evil. Related Links

Extractions: The Federation Internationale Gymnastique (FIG) has established a definite order in which gymnastics events must be performed. In the following order, men must perform the floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. Women must perform the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. This newest Olympic gymnastics discipline may be best described as a cross between a floor exercise and classical ballet. It approaches the area of dance and tends to favor the more mature gymnast. Rhythmic gymnastics requires smooth, graceful body movements while performing with handheld apparatus such as the hoop, ball, clubs, rope, and ribbon. Only one apparatus may be used at a time. Unlike the floor exercise, however, there are no airborne acrobatic moves; at least one part of the body must remain in contact with the 12-meter-square floor mat at all times. Everything is done to music, and gymnasts often choose classical or other soft, melodious tunes. (Floor exercise routines, by contrast, are often performed to jazz or other upbeat tempos.) Rhythmic events are judged on the same 10-point scale and evaluated according to choreographic quality and originality, harmony, precision, and execution.

Extractions: TOPS BOTTOMS AUGUST 2000 While the Chicago Cubs keep slipping, Sammy Sosa keeps slugging. Sosa hit his league-leading 44th and 45th homeruns Wednesday night as his Cubs beat the San Diego Padres, 5-1. Combined with Tuesday's four hour marathon win, it was the first time in a month that the Cubs won back-to-back games. He is being tagged the "John Rocker of Australia" by his fellow long jumpers. Australian jumper Jai Taurima said earlier this week of the wet and cool weather conditions of the upcoming Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, "you can pretty much knock out all the dark guys." He added, "we jumped in Salamanca (Spain) a month ago, and those guys just couldn't compete well in bad conditions. It was wet and cold." This, of course, set off American jumpers Savante Stringfellow and Melvin Lister who equated Taurima with Rocker, and who said that they don't even consider Taurima competition for the gold. Taurima is half indigenous Australian.
