Extractions: Artistic Rhythmic Gymnastics has existed for more than 2,000 years, but its development as a competitive sport began just little more than 100 years ago. During the 1800's, mass and individual exhibitions were conducted by various athletic and school clubs, as well as ethnic organizations, like the Turnvereins and Sokols. Although slow to catch on in the schools, gymnastics did flourish in the Turnvereins and Sokols. It was introduced to the U.S. and its school systems in the 1830's by such immigrants as Charles Beck, Charles Follen and Francis Lieber. The Bureau of the European Gymnastics Federation, which would evolve into the International Gymnastics Federation, was formed in 1881 opening the way for international competition. In the United States, the Amateur Athletic Union assumed control of gymnastics, along with most other amateur sports, in 1883. Prior to this time gymnastics championships were held by various clubs and organizations. The first large-scale meeting of gymnasts was the 1896 Olympics, where Germany virtually swept the medal parade. Gymnasts from five countries competed in events which included men's horizontal bar, parallel bars, pommel horse, rings and vault.

Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.

Competitions are offered for men in the artistic events and women in artistic and rhythmic events. As in all Special Olympics sports, athletes are grouped in competition divisions according to their ability level, age and gender. Gymnastics is one of Special Olympics' expanding sports. Today 7,837 athletes in 80 Programs around the world train and compete in gymnastics. Women may compete in up to four events in either artistic or rhythmic competitions. The artistic events include uneven bars, the balance beam, vaulting and floor exercises. The rhythmic competition includes rope, hoop, ball and ribbon. For the well-rounded athlete, the all-around competition offers an additional challenge. Men and women may choose to compete in every event, which qualifies them for the all-around. Its success in promoting teamwork and inclusion can be seen throughout Special Olympics.

Before we can even consider the issue of ballroom dancing as an Olympic sport, we must first address the issue of whether it can be considered a sport in any terms. The Olympic Commission defines a "sport" as "any activity that combines a physical effort with a certain amount of skill." Clearly dancing requires effort. A study by the University of Freiburg in Germany which was published in the November 3, 1997 issues of Forbes Magazine, showed that "a vigorous rumba burns up the same number of calories and requires the same exertion as a bicycle competition or a footrace over a similar period of time." Ballroom dancing (or "Dancesport" which it is now officially called) is an extremely physical activity and at an advanced level dancers need to be very fit. They may not have the bulky look of a football player or the bulging biceps of a wrestler, but there is more to fitness than over-inflated muscles. Dancers are known for their aerobic fitness. As their level of competition increases so does their speed, balance and strength. In addition, Ballroom Dancing utilizes a variety of different muscles including, rear deltoids, rhombus, glutes and calves. Great strength is needed in the upper body to maintain the tension between partners. Also, many dancers cross train with a variety of sports to keep themselves in peak physical condition. That takes care of the "physical effort" part of the definition...now what about skill? First of all, as with any activity that requires talent, not just any John Doe off the street can excel in competitive Ballroom Dancing. Everyone at some point has watched a ballroom couple glide effortlessly across the floor. They make it look so easy but the reality is very different. After all, what sport didn't look like it would be easy to master before you actually tried it?
