The First Persian Gulf War, Hussein declared that the invasion was a response to overproduction of oil in Kuwait, which had cost Iraq over $14 million when oil prices fell. Hussein also accused Kuwait of illegally pumping oil from Iraq's Rumaila oil field. The UN Security Council called for Iraq to withdraw and subsequently embargoed most trade with Iraq. On Aug. 7, U.S. troops moved into Saudi Arabia to protect Saudi oil fields. On Nov. 29, the United Nations set Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for a peaceful withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. When Saddam Hussein refused to comply, Operation Desert Storm was launched on Jan. 18, 1991, under the leadership of U.S. Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf The U.S.-led coalition began a massive air war to destroy Iraq's forces and military and civil infrastructure. Iraq called for terrorist attacks against the coalition and launched Scud missiles at Israel (in an unsuccessful attempt to widen the war and break up the coalition) and at Saudi Arabia. The main coalition forces invaded Kuwait and S Iraq on Feb. 24 and, over the next four days, encircled and defeated the Iraqis and liberated Kuwait. When U.S. President George H. W.

Extractions: WASHINGTON (CNN) Twelve years ago to the day, I was covering the start of the Gulf War. I remember those hours very vividly. I was then CNN's military affairs correspondent at the Pentagon. Operation Desert Storm began with a powerful array of U.S. and coalition firepower directed exclusively from the air during those opening days. Indeed, the air war would go on for some four weeks followed by four days of ground combat. Kuwait, which had been overrun by Iraqi forces the previous August, was liberated in the process. Exactly 12 years ago, former U.S. Ambassador Joe Wilson had just returned to Washington from Baghdad. He had been the acting U.S. ambassador to Iraq during those months of Operation Desert Shield, which preceded the war. He was the last U.S. official to meet with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. I spoke with him this week about those tumultuous days. He recalled that upon his return to Washington, he went to the White House to meet with then-President George Bush and his top national security advisers. "They were most interested in getting a view for what it was like on the streets of Baghdad and how the Iraqi civilians were taking this," he said, adding that the president and his aides also wanted to know what it was like dealing with Saddam Hussein.

World War II As twilight approached on February 23, 1991, U.S. Marine Colonel James A. Fulks was getting desperate. Although the ground campaign of Operation Desert Storm would not begin for more than twelve hours, Fulks had nearly twenty-seven hundred U.S. Marines a dozen miles inside of Iraqi-occupied Kuwait and had orders to move that night through the first of the two thick minefields the Iraqi army had planted just to the north. After days of searching, however, his scouts still had not found a path through the mines. Now Fulks was preparing to order a rapid and potentially dangerous effort to clear a way through the deadly obstacle belt.

The study, commissioned by DoD, concludes that veterans whose units may have been exposed to very low levels of chemical warfare agent resulting from the demolition of munitions at Khamisiyah, Iraq have a slightly higher frequency of deaths due to brain cancer than veterans who were unlikely to have been exposed. The frequency of death was the same in the two groups when all causes were studied. The results of this study should be regarded as preliminary. Further investigation is necessary because sarin and cyclosarin have never been shown to cause cancer. Also, the length of time between the possible exposure and illness is much less than the usual 15 to 20 years for brain cancer. This study has only evaluated deaths during the first nine years after this possible exposure.

Extractions: From staff and wire reports BAGHDAD, Iraq Iraq released a detailed statement on a U.S. pilot downed during the Persian Gulf War, saying a U.S. decision to change the pilot's status from "killed in action" to "missing in action" was a bid to antagonize Iraq. The U.S. Navy last week changed the status of Lt. Cmdr. Michael Scott Speicher from "killed in action" to "missing in action" because of what it says is evidence he may have survived the crash. In response, an official spokesman of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said Sunday that U.S. authorities, primarily President Bill Clinton, had announced a new "lie" on the issue in order to create a problem with Iraq. "It has been apparent from the facts of the issue, [which] are indisputable, that the American statements [are] an open attempt to cover the truth," the Iraqi government statement said.
