The books are listed in chronological order. When the book has been translated into English, the first date refers to the original publication. The website was created by Daniel Schugurensky , Department of Adult Education, Community Development and Counselling Psychology, The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto (OISE/UT) Review by Veronica Ramirez (UCLA) On April 25, 1974, the military dictatorship that had ruled Portugal was overthrown, resulting in independence movements in Guinea Bissau and the Cape Verde islands. The struggle for independence was under the leadership of Amilcar Cabral and the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and the Cape Verde islands (PAIGC). In May of 1975, Paulo Freire and his team from the Department of Education of the World Council of Churches and the Institute for Cultural Action (IDAC) were invited by the government, through the Commission on Education, to make a first visit so that their collaborations in the field of literacy education of adults may be discussed. In Pedagogy in Process- The Letters to Guinea Bissau, Paulo Freire publishes the letters sent to the new education authorities in Guinea Bissau during the mid 1970's, and reflects on them. The book is structured in three parts: the introduction (p1-68), the 17 letters (p71-154), and the postscript (p55-78). The introduction explained both how Freire came to be involved in the adult education program in Guinea Bissau, and his participation in the program from May 1975 to October 1976. The 17 letters that are included in this book were written by Freire in Geneva and sent to Mario Cabral, the Commissioner of State for Education and Culture, and his team in Guinea Bissau. These letters addressed problems and offered suggestions for the development of adult literacy education. The postscript, written by Freire in May 1977, includes updates on the adult education program in Guinea Bissau.

Inter Pares staff member Sylvie Perras writes of her recent visit. A festive spirit reigns in Abu, on the island of Formosa, which is about to host the third assembly of the Urok complex. This decision-making body is gathered to adopt the management plan for the Urok islands' coastal area, which was developed over three years with local communities to ensure the sustainable development of their natural resources. To day is an important step in this participatory and democratic process, where men and women, young and old, from the islands of Formosa, Nago, and Chedia are designing together a better future for all, one that melds development, spirituality, and culture. The Urok development plan is inspired by the traditional knowledge and practices of the Bijagos people. Tiniguena has facilitated the community-development process, starting first with the creation of committees, then larger village and island assemblies, finishing at last with the creation of a space that brings together people from the three islands - the Urok Assembly. To reach Formosa, in the Bijagos archipelago, from the capital Bissau takes a good two hours. I take my place in the boat with Augusta Henriques of Tiniguena and other partners, who are co-conspirators in this project. The boat bucks the waves, going against the strong tide, leaving us drained and drenched to the bone but not having dampened our enthusiasm. We pull onto shore in a thicket of mangroves. In the village, the women greet us, dancing. The joy and effervescence in the air are palpable.

Extractions: Home ... Communication i... Organising for change in Guinea Bissau Guinea Bissau has embraced the new communication culture which is being advocated for water and sanitation. In the early stages great attention was paid to the need for an organising centre and the need to increase the capacity of the sector for communication. The Minister for Natural Resources took the lead to launch IEC activities to improve the performance of the water sector. (Water supply and sanitation is the responsibility of the General Directorate of Water Resources, within the Ministry.) The Minister nominated a coordinator to lead the initiative. At the same time the government established an inter-ministerial working group to coordinate IEC actions in different sectors. The group is now integrated into the National Environmental Committee and is coordinated by The Secretary of State of the Information Ministry. Secretaries from the Planning Ministry and Ministry of Health, as well as two Directors General from the Natural Resources Ministry, participate. UNDP coordinates IEC efforts of donor agencies. The working group includes representatives from the Rural Radio Programme, the World Bank, and UNICEF. A national communication strategy will be introduced to sector staff though a national workshop.

The exhibition explores the transatlantic slave trade and focuses on the centrality of the slave trade in the making of the modern world. It aims at mobilizing the international community, the academic world and civil society towards helping to promote a culture of peace in redressing the aftermath of this tragedy, in order to prevent new forms of slavery. The exhibition was created by the Schomburg Center for Research on Black Culture in association with the UNESCO Slave Route Project. Presented in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, the exhibition has toured internationally in countries such as the Bahamas, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Mozambique and Senegal.
