Extractions: Groundhog Day is celebrated in the USA on February 2nd. Each year on this day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, people from all over the USA watch Phil the Groundhog as he emerges from his burrow. On Groundhog Day, Phil the Groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter's hibernation. If he sees his shadow, he is thought to return to his hole (some people think this is an omen of six more weeks of bad winter weather). If he doesn't see his shadow (i.e., if it is cloudy), he is thought to stay above ground (some people think of this as a sign of mild weather to come). These crafts projects are for preschool, kindergarten and elementary school children. The crafts use inexpensive materials found around the house, like egg cartons, cardboard, paper, boxes, string, crayons, paint, glue, etc. See

Worksheets The tradition of Groundhog Day originates on Candlemas Day. On this day, clergy blessed and distributed candles for the long, cold winter. Germans added to this tradition by designating the hedgehog as the official means by which the weather was predicted. If it came out and saw it's shadow, then you could expect six more weeks of winter. If it didn't, you could expect an early spring.
NOBLE Web: Groundhog Day Come to the Groundhog Day Party A lesson plan from Education World; groundhog day crafts Easy ideas for kids from the Enchanted Learning website http://www.noblenet.org/year/groundhog.html
Extractions: NOBLE: North of Boston Library Exchange Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2, has its roots in an ancient Celtic celebration called Imbolog. The date is one of the four cross-quarter days of the year, the midpoints between the spring and fall equinoxes and the summer and winter solstice. Imbolog, marking the midpoint between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, was the most important of the cross-quarter days. In a society dependent on agriculture and therefore on the weather, this was a time to celebrate having made it halfway through winter. The superstition arose that if the weather was fair on Imbolog, the second half of the winterwould be cold and stormy, but if the weather was cold and overcast or stormy, the second half of the winter would be mild. In early Christian times, February 2 was celebrated as Candlemas, but the earlier Imbolog superstitions persisted. In medieval Scotland, for example, they said, "If Candlemas be bright and clear, there'll be two winters in the year" and in England, they said, "If Candlemas be sunny and warm, ye may mend your mittens and look for a storm." The Romans learned these traditional beliefs from the Scottish Celts, and brought them to the area that was to become Germany, where they became a part of the folk culture. German immigrants brought these beliefs with them to Pennsylvania, where the tradition of predicting the weather became centered around the woodchuck or groundhog. The town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has an annual celebration centering around the activity of the groundhog "Punxsutawney Phil."
