From north to south it is 1,600 miles long, about equal to the distance between New York and Denver, while at its widest point it spans about 750 miles. Its total area (840,000 square miles) is more than three times the size of Texas. And its rugged coastline, deeply indented by fjords and inlets, totals some 25,000 miles, just about equal to the circumference of the Earth at the equator. Much of the great wedge-shaped island lies north of the Arctic Circle. (Its northern tip is less than 500 miles from the North Pole.) In this frigid Arctic environment, approximately 85 percent of the island's surface is covered by a permanent ice cap. Averaging 5,000 feet in thickness, the ice cap in some places is as much as 14,000 feet thick and includes about 10 percent of all the ice in the world. Only a relatively narrow coastal strip and scattered nunataks (isolated mountain peaks that project above the surrounding ice) are free of permanent cover of ice and snow. The Greenland ice cap, in fact, is the second largest in the world, exceeded only by the massive ice cap that covers Antarctica. The bedrock beneath the ice is an eastern extension of the Canadian Shield, the expanse of ancient granite rock that makes up much of Canada's vast interior lowland plain. The surface of the bedrock is far from even. In some places it lies below sea level, while elsewhere it rises up to form high mountain ranges. (The highest peak in Greenland, Mount Gunnbjorn in the eastern coastal range, reaches 12,139 feet.) In overall contours the land surface beneath the ice is more or less saucer-shaped, with a central depression bordered by mountain ranges.

Its northerly location, at the point where the Atlantic meets the Arctic Ocean, means that Greenland is surrounded principally by cold ocean currents, so the coasts are constantly being cooled. This, combined with the radiation of cold from the inland ice, gives Greenland its arctic climate. The ice cap or inland ice covers 1,833,900 square km, equivalent to 85 percent of Greenland's total area, and extends 2,500 km (1,553 miles) from north to south and up to 1,000 km from east to west. At its center, the ice can be up to 3 km thick, representing 10 percent of the world's total fresh water reserves.If all the ice were to melt, the world's oceans would rise seven meters. Climate Greenland is often associated with cold and darkness and it can, of course, get very cold. However, there is also plenty of light and, although the polar darkness often reigns (in Qaanaaq, the sun doesn't rise for a whole three months!), it is never totally dark. Greenland enjoys more hours of summer than anywhere down south, but the weather is nowhere near as warm, even though the light is much more intense. Greenland summers won't give you an all-over tan, but your face and neck will turn a beautiful shade of brown.

Maybe it is due to the fact that during the 8th century some exiles from Iceland went to an at that time unknown country with a harsh climate. But to make the officials in Iceland more or less jealous they said they lived in a wonderful green country. Others say that Erik the Red, who went there from Iceland around 980 (in exile after being accused of murder), called it Greenland to attract new inhabitants. Maybe it is true. There is also an other, more scientifical, explanation. It is true that before the year 1500 there was a milder climate in Greenland, in almost the whole northern hemisphere. So Greenland could have been more greener than it is today. After 1500 till 1800 there has been the called Short Ice-age. Temperatures dropped heavily, especially in Greenland; it dropped so low, that inhabitants from abroad, Normans, starved to death. The third explanation is simple. The most southern part is in fact very green, you will find sheepfarms and a lot of green grass. It is not that strange, knowing that the southern tip lies at the same geographical height as Oslo (Norway) and St. Petersburg (Russia)

    Extractions: I had the opportunity to work aboard a small, polar cruise ship last summer, and was able to spend some time in Greenland. What a wonderful place! The people were, generally, very friendly and kind. The Danish government seems to really have a handle on how to allow indigenous peoples to thrive and create their own economy in northern climes. A huge discrepancy between these communities and Canada's northern native communities. Hopefully, one day, we'll get it right.
