The two groups are usually considered suborders of the Orthoptera. Attempts to create a separate order for the two suborders Caelifera and Ensifera (e.g. Kevan 1986, in which Ensifera = Grylloptera) have not found general entomological acceptance (see Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships). The name Orthoptera is derived from "orthos" meaning "straight" and "pteron" = "wing."

The paper cited health authorities in Wad Medani, capital of the central al-Jezira state, as saying an epidemic of what they considered to be asthma had afflicted 1,685 people since October 22, all of whom had since been cured. The authorities also said 11 people had died from the breathing difficulties. "The appearance of the epidemic is linked to the unprecedented increase in the grasshopper insects," the daily quoted the health authorities as saying. Resident Joseph Mogum in Wad Medani, about 110 miles (176 km) southeast of the capital Khartoum, said the grasshoppers gave off a strong smell which caused breathing problems. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation said on October 21 that swarms of locusts were threatening crops in northeastern Sudan, Mauritania and northern Niger, but it was not clear if it was the same species that was affecting Wad Medani in central Sudan.

The most severe infestations are likely to occur during seasons when the weather is hot and dry. Scouting should begin in May and early June, and producers should be prepared to start management measures when young hopper populations reach threatening levels. Grasshopper eggs are laid beneath the soil surface in pod-like structures that the female deposits from her abdomen. Each egg pod consists of 20 to 120 elongated eggs securely cemented together; the whole mass is somewhat eggshaped and covered with soil. A female grasshopper produces from eight to 25 egg masses. The species of grasshoppers that cause major crop loss overwinter in the egg stage, although a few other noneconomic species overwinter as nymphs. In the Northern Plains, grasshopper egg hatch normally begins in late April to early May. The peak hatch occurs about mid June and the hatch is usually nearing completion by late June. Cool and extremely dry springs may delay the hatch, allowing it to continue into July.

Extractions: The differential grasshopper is the largest economically important species. It is 1-1/2 to 1-3/4 inches long, yellowish, with brown and black markings and distinct chevron-like black markings on the hind legs. The adults of migratory and red-legged grasshoppers are about 1 inch longreddish-brown above and yellow beneath, with red-tinged hind legs. The nymphs are wingless, but otherwise resemble the adults. The elongated, brown-to-orange eggs (glued together in masses) form a pod in uncultivated soil,usually 1 to 2 inches below the surface. The name Orthoptera is sometimes used for all the insects in the "orthopteroid" assemblage, including roaches , earwigs, mantises, and many others. However, it is more usual to restrict the Orthoptera (Greek for "straight-wing") to the crickets, grasshoppers, katydids, and their kin. These insects are instantly recognizable by their long hind legs, which are modified for jumping. Most orthopterans can generate noise by rubbing special organs together on their legs or on their wings, a habit known as stridulation . This photograph, taken with the UCMP Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope , shows the "file" a ridged vein on the wings of a mole cricket in the genus Oecantha . Mole crickets rub this file over another specialized structure on the other wing, the "scraper," to produce sound.
