BECon Photos Each year the Wisconsin Foundation for the Arts organizes the Governor's Awards in Support of the Arts recognizing extraordinary contributions to the vitality of the arts in local communities or statewide. The awards are in three categories: individual leaders, corporations or businesses, and community organizations. A total of four awards are presented in a late fall ceremony at the Executive Residence in Madison. The Governor's Award ceremony, which will be in November 2005, includes an elegant video illustrating recipients' gifts to the arts, along with a detailed segment on the commissioned artist. A tape of the event is created and then aired around the holidays on Wisconsin commercial and public television stations. A feature story on the commissioned artist appears in the fall Arts Letter, of the Wisconsin Foundation for the Arts.

In Portland, Maine, at my hot glass studio and art glass gallery, you can watch me using a centuries-old hand blowing glass techniques to create aquariums and floral art glass designs, which appear to be in suspended animation. My glass work process involves traditional lamp working and murrini techniques. I make hand-pulled glass rods and glass canes in a variety of colors and then, use them to create the glass design elements inside each glass sculpture. Layering each piece of glass in the design - from the inside out - allows me to sculpt three-dimensional underwater seascapes and gardenscapes in glass. Finally, I encase the interior glass scene in clear, molten crystal. One of my fondest glass making career highlights includes the presentation of one of my pieces to Jacques Ives Cousteau as a "Spirit and Enrichment Award" by the Atlantic Center for the Arts (1991).     Extractions: The exhibition which this display documents was a long time in the planning. Many people helped with the work involved. In 1979-80, a group of graduate students in the Department of the History of Art and the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology participated in an introductory study unit with me a learning experience which did much to bring ideas for the exhibition into focus. The members of this group were Mary Ann Eaverly, Julia Eisendrath, Lauren Arnold, Nick Stavrinides, and Ann van Rosevelt. Julia Eisendrath continued on to devote much time and thought to a meticulous inventory of the glass collections in the Museum. This was a laborious project, essential to the efficient production of the exhibition. Two graduate students arrived fresh on the scene in 1981-82: Victoria Weston (History of Art and Japanese Studies) and Laurie McCoy (Classical Art and Archaeology). I am most grateful to them for their cheerful industriousness through a long winter of snowy forays to the Graduate Library. Laurie McCoy saw the project through to its completion, collaborating with me on research. In addition, Prof. John D'Arms, Ms. Norma Jenkins (Research Librarian at the Corning Museum of Glass), Dr. Aileen Gatten, and Prof. Charles Witke have provided indispensable help on specific scholarly problems from the topography of Puteoli, to Sino-Roman relations in antiquity and obscure Chinese rhapsodists, to vexing questions of mirrors and metaphors, Isidorus, and Alexander's glass submarine.

In this interview James discusses various aspects of his history with Glass music and his work with Linda. I found him to be a fascinating man with a passion for history as well as the instruments he plays. He also discusses the difficulties he encountered in his quest, and the techniques used to produce this music. He offers interesting insights into how Linda herself works and tells how two people from completely different musical worlds came together. Rich Bailey Rich Bailey: I read a few articles about you in preparation for this interview. What I found initially fascinating was the quest for these instruments. You seem to have a dual mind; one of a musician and that of a collector. True? Dennis James: Yes, that is the exact crossover category I fall into quite happily in all of my endeavors, be they in music or just daily living. I seem to be inspired from both directions you mention: objects and their use. For an example of “object- to-use”: I bought a lovely antique brass Victorian bird cage that I admired as an aesthetic object . Since I have a shall-we-say intimate relationship to Mozart via his glass compositions, I thought I'd sort of do an "homage d'" by using it to house a live canary; as did Mozart. There is some thought, though, that this pet bird Mozart was so fond of (and that he missed greatly during his travels and for which he wrote one of his most affecting compositional laments in tribute upon its death) may have been a starling, but no matter here.
