Adult males are black with white cheeks, while females are a golden/buff colour. White cheeked gibbons pair for life and live in close family units. When the offspring are old enough they will leave the group and begin their own family group. Fruit, leaves, buds, some small invertebrates. A single baby is born after 7-8 months gestation. Females will have a baby about every two to three years. The average lifespan for a black and white cheeked gibbon is about 28 years. Gibbons are smallest of the ape family, which includes orangutans, gorillas and chimpanzees Infants are born a whitish buff colour, turning black when they are about a year old. Male babies will stay black for the rest of their lives, but females will turn golden again at about eight years old. These are the most active of all gibbons, they move faster, more quietly, and farther each day than any other forest apes or monkeys. Brachiation (swinging arm over arm) comprises 90% of their activity and enables them to leap up to 10 metres between trees. Because they can not swim, they avoid crossing open water. Their remarkable agility makes a healthy adult gibbon virtually invulnerable to predation.

    Extractions: Twice this past year 1996-1997 the grade 6, 7, 8 class of ISOL took trips to the Gunung Leuser Ecosystem. Both trips we took were to the Sekunder area near Besitang on the East side of the ecosystem. The observation site that we worked at is on the border of the forest and the 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres) that was slashed and burnt three years ago. The scientists in the area are trying to compare the life in the somber wasteland to the small amount of lush, succulent forest left. The Sekunder area is lowland - that is why scientists are actively studying that area. Because the Sekunder area is lowland, it is home to some of the last wild Sumatran Elephants, Sumatran Tigers and Sumatran Rhinos. The two trips that we made were to explore and examine the forest with the scientists. Our first trip from November 4th to 6th was to choose a topic to study. The second trip from April 14th to 16th was to study the topic of our choice. On the first trip I saw many animals and plants in the extraordinary jungle. Most interesting to me were the primates. The primates of the area are the orangutan, the white-handed gibbon, the siamang, the long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, Tomas-leaf monkeys and the silver-leaf monkeys. There is also another very small primate the slow lorry, which scientists are not sure exists in this area. When we were there we also conducted a survey of the small mammals, in the area. We set up small traps in many different places - in low brush, in moist areas and in dry areas. The traps had trap doors that snap down when the animal pulls on the baited hook. For bait we used bananas and peanut butter. We caught many different species of field rats. The most common was the Malaysian Field Rat.

On deck for the first time he is taken aback by calls from the rigging, which at first he first mistakes for a boy, but then is told they come from a “Java Ape”. This is a gibbon - a siamang ( Hylobates syndactylus , aver. wgt. 23 lbs.) – one of the species of gibbon and one that is very vocal, like the one on the Lively. Gibbons are lessor apes, distantly related to humans, who are great apes. You can see they are smaller with longer arms, adapted to spend most of their life in the treetops. They brachiate (travel arm over arm swinging from the branches) and do not jump from branch to branch, as do smaller primates. They form nuclear families, with the parents mated for life and the young raised by both parents. Gibbons are omnivorous, eating foods found in the forest canopy: leaves, fruit, seeds, insects, eggs, birds, etc. But the doctor and the Captain also had to content with another ape on the Lively, at least part of one.

They are loud gibbons, but most important of all- they are living gibbons!! If not for the work of the Vejjajivas and their organisation, the Wild Animal Rescue Foundation of Thailand (WAR), many of these gibbons would be dead today. Leonie and Pongsagdi Vejjajiva In a recent crackdown on a racket using baby gibbons for photos the International Primate Protection League (IPPL) reported that,"Three baby white-handed gibbons, one baby pileated gibbon and one tiny infant crab-eating macaque were rescued from Pattaya. They were sent to the rescue centre operated by WAR. "On arrival at the sanctuary, the baby primates were given a check-up by the foundation veterinarian. They were all described as malnourished, suffering from mineral and vitamin deficiencies, intestinal worms, and colds. One gibbon had a finger missing and one had all his teeth pulled out.
