The issue has bubbled to the surface in recent weeks because Scientologists have stepped up their criticism of Germany, and have likened their treatment to the Nazis' persecution of the Jews. While critical of Germany, the U.S. government has nevertheless heard that claim before, and rejected it. The German government claims the Church of Scientology is a cult that exerts mind control over its members and which often extorts large sums of money from members. The church, founded in the 1950s by L. Ron Hubbard, claims 8 million members worldwide, including about 30,000 members in Germany. It fought for years to be accepted as a church, finally gaining legal status as such in the United States in 1993. Group that once criticized Scientologists now owned by one - December 19, 1996

Comparison USA-Germany The personal thoughts of Axel Boldt, a Germanborn college professor living in the United States, about life in germany and the United States. http://math-www.uni-paderborn.de/~axel/us-d.html
Extractions: I grew up in Germany, lived there for 26 years, then moved to the United States in 1992. First I was a graduate student and now I work as a college teacher. There are many stereotypes in Germany about life in the United States. Here I will try to compare these stereotypes to the reality in the US as I perceive it. In this comparison, I will also portrait the situation in Germany so that Americans might learn something about my country and Germans have something to criticize. Of course, this comparison is necessarily subjective - take it as just another data point. I am constantly generalizing here; I'm talking about "the Americans" and about "the Germans" and I'm aware of the fact that, strictly speaking, these generalizations are wrong; I'm trying to capture a hypothetical average. And not even that: just the average of my personal acquaintances mixed with some information gathered from news media. The first observation is that, in most instances, the US show a much larger variation than Germany does, so that talking about the "average" is more dangerous when referring to the US than when referring to Germany. Since I started this page several years ago, I repeatedly noticed that the differences between America and Germany are getting smaller, a result of Germany moving in America's direction.
Association Of German Banks Bundesverband deutscher Banken, which represents the interests of the private commercial banks, was founded in Cologne in 1951, and moved from Cologne to Berlin in March 1999. http://www.german-banks.com/
Extractions: "The integration of euro payment systems and the retail banking markets are key to the completion of a single market for financial services. While SEPA is close to implementation, we still have it all to do in the retail area", said Hans-Joachim Massenberg, Deputy General Manager of the Association of German Banks. Payment by bank card is becoming increasingly popular across Europe, gradually replacing the constant search for the right change. No wonder such a frequently used system also attracts fraudsters. Although bank cards are regarded internationally as forgery-proof, customers should still be on their guard and follow some simple rules in order to avoid loss and fraudulent use of their cards. more ...

The 26-year-old was shot in the hand and leg while stopping at a car park near Poppenhausen northwest of Schweinfurt at about 5.30 a.m. on Monday to clear ice from his windscreen. A gunman immediately opened fire, police said. Despite his injuries the serviceman, who was in civilian clothes, managed to drive his Ford Mustang to a military police station. "There's nothing to suggest a political or anti-American background to this," a police spokesman told Reuters. The soldier has since undergone surgery. Police said they had no leads yet on the attackers or the motive. Police are appealing for witnesses. The shooting took place around about five kilometres (three miles) from the barracks, where the wounded man's unit, the 2nd Brigade of the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division is stationed. The soldier's Ford Mustang was carrying U.S. military licence plates that closely resemble German plates, except for small NATO and U.S. symbols. The U.S. military replaced more distinctive plates in 2000 out of concerns for force protection.

Faced with predictions that the German population could contract by a quarter from its current 82 million over the next 50 years, the report has recommended the government admits 50,000 immigrants a year to counteract an old and shrinking citizenship. The commission, led by Christian Democrat (CDU) Rita Suessmuth, said: "We must recognise that to secure our prosperity, our future, we are dependent on people from other countries with skills that we desperately need." The report has advised the new immigrants should be selected according to a points system based on age and skills similar to that used in countries like Canada. Separate quotas should be established for students and skilled workers in sectors of the economy with particular labour shortages, while financial support should be boosted for programmes to better integrate foreigners living in Germany, the commission adds.

The Germans, yet to win the World Cup, will play Sweden on October 12 after they beat Canada 2-1 in the other semifinal. The U.S., favorites to retain their title, fell behind to a Kerstin Garefrekes header on the quarter-hour mark despite dominating much of the tense match in Portland, Oregon. Maren Meinert and Birgit Prinz both claimed second-half injury-time goals on the counter-attack to increase American woe, and leave players such as Mia Hamm likely bowing out of World Cup soccer after a glittering career in tears. "That may have been the greatest match in the history of women's soccer," U.S. coach April Heinrichs said.
