The maps show the land area susceptible to inundation by a storm surge due to hurricanes of each of the five hurricane categories. The map data came from the National Hurricane Center's Sea, Lake, and Overland Surges from Hurricanes model. The maps also show the elevation of the land, the coastal bathymetry, and topographic elements. County emergency managers use the maps to determine the safest areas for emergency shelters and the best evacuation routes. Extractions: for Web Mapping There is no teacher like experience. This is particularly true of computer applications-including GIS. Lessons taught in an abstract manner may be helpful but cannot provide the depth of knowledge obtained from hands-on use of an application. Realizing this, the Department of Anthropology and Geography at Georgia State University in Atlanta has developed an innovative curriculum for teaching GIS. Students create digital spatial databases that are placed on a Web site for interactive query and display using the ArcView Internet Map Server (IMS) extension for ArcView GIS. Through developing real-life applications in ArcView GIS, students move through the various phases of project development. They gain valuable insights and concrete experience in the processes and pitfalls of constructing complex GIS databases. While these projects provide unique educational benefits to students, they also serve as valuable research tools for department professors and are an excellent source of online educational material that can be used to augment undergraduate classes and provide professional-quality information to the community at large. In response to student demand and faculty interest, a program that used an interactive, Web-oriented approach to teaching GIS was designed by department faculty members Elaine Hallisey Hendrix, Zhi-Yong Yin, Susan M. Walcott, and Jeffrey McMichael. In 1998, the department submitted a successful proposal to the University System of Georgia Teaching and Learning grant program and received $20,000 for fiscal year 1999 to implement the plan.
