Extractions: Calter photo In the last unit, Number Symbolism, we saw that in the ancient world certain numbers had symbolic meaning, aside from their ordinary use for counting or calculating. In this unit we'll show that the plane figures, the polygons, triangles, squares, hexagons, and so forth, were related to the numbers (three and the triangle, for example), were thought of in a similar way, and in fact, carried even more emotional baggage than the numbers themselves, because they were visual. This takes us into the realm of Sacred Geometry. For now we'll do the polygons directly related to the Pythagoreans; the equilateral triangle (Sacred tetractys), hexagon, triangular numbers, and pentagram. We'll also introduce tilings, the art of covering a plane surface with polygons.

Geometer Rachel Fletcher introduces the Geometer's Angle, a column in the Nexus Network Journal dedicated to geometrical constructions, the procedures for drawing them, their use, significance and symbolism. Geometer's Angle 13: SIX + ONE by Rachel Fletcher I n Hebrew, Christian and Islamic revelation, the world is created in six days of physical activity, followed by a single day of stillness and rest. Geometry provides a fitting metaphor, for the radii of six equal circles mark out the circumference of an identical circle placed in the center. click here to read more Click here to see other Geometer's Angle columns available online G eometry is from the Greek (from "earth, land" + - metria "measuring"), which means "earth measure as in surveying the land" [Hoad 1996, Liddell 1940, Simpson 1989]. Herodotus believed the Greeks imported it from Egypt, where its was used to calculate lands that were lost to the annual flooding of the Nile [Herodotus 1998 II, 109, 136]. In fact, geometry dates to our ability to count and to translate number into spatial pattern. It appears in prehistoric structures and is practiced everywhere by children at play. Geometry as a technique for spatial organization evolved in western culture from ancient Egyptian sages and surveyors and from Greek philosophers. It was preserved by master builders of Gothic cathedrals and later revived by humanists and artists of the Renaissance. It continues to influence the way we see the world today.

Outline: Introduction Vitruvius Ad Quadratum The Sacred Cut ... Reading Introduction We leave ancient Greece now and move forward a few centuries to Rome. We'll start with a brief look at the architect Vitruvius, whose words echo down through the centuries. When we discussed the polygons we looked at the triangle, pentagon, and hexagon, leaving the square and rectangle for this unit. We'll see here that the square and its diagonal, the so called ad quadratum , played a central role in Roman architecture.

Extractions: F rancene Hart is a internationally recognized visionary artist whose work has been widely published in books and magazines and hangs in the homes of art collectors and the offices of healers and seekers around the planet. She was summoned by spirit in 2001 to the Big Island of Hawaii and is now painting, swimming and living her bliss in bless'ed Hawaii. "Reverence for the natural environment, and experiencing the interconnectedness between all things has long guided me to create watercolor paintings of beauty and spirit. Life's continuing adventure has led me into an exciting exploration into the wisdom and symbolic imagery of Sacred Geometry. These paintings act as a bridge between this reality and a metaphorical world of healing, continuity, and transformation. I use multiple transparent watercolor glazes coupled with image overlapping techniques, and sacred geometry to produce visions of a multi-dimensional reality. It is my intention to create art that embodies the vibration of Universal Love and expresses the joy and gratitude I feel for the honor of being part of this earthwalk." ~Blessings, Francene~ Each of the images in this gallery are available as Full Color Prints or ArtCards.
Rediscover Ancient Egypt - Sacred Geometry In Ancient Egypt The Ancient Egyptian works, large or small, are admired by all, because they are proportionally harmonious and as such appeal to our inner as well as outer http://www.egypt-tehuti.org/articles/sacred-geometry.html
Extractions: Herodotus, the father of history and a native Greek, stated in 500 BCE: Now, let me talk more of Egypt for it has a lot of admirable things and what one sees there is superior to any other country. The Ancient Egyptian works, large or small, are admired by all, because they are proportionally harmonious and as such appeal to our inner as well as outer feelings. This harmonic design concept is popularly known as sacred geometrywhere all figures could be drawn or created using a straight line (not even necessarily a ruler) and compass, i.e. without measurement (dependent on proportion only). The principles of sacred geometry are of Ancient Egyptian origin, which constituted the basis of harmonic proportions, as evident in their temples, buildings, theology, ...etc. The Ancient Egyptian design followed these principles in well-detailed canons. Plato himself attested to the longevity of the Egyptian harmonic canon of proportion (sacred geometry), when he stated, That the pictures and statues made ten thousand years ago, are in no one particular better or worse than what they now make.

Sacred Places: Sacred Geometry of our relationship to the wholea blueprint for the mind to the sacred foundation of all things created. We call this blueprint sacred geometry . http://www.arthistory.sbc.edu/sacredplaces/sacredgeo.html
Extractions: An exploration of how and why places become invested with SACREDNESS and how the SACRED is embodied or made manifest through ART and ARCHITECTURE "All things throughout our universe seem to follow the same fundamental blueprint or geometric patterns. These geometrical archetypes, which reveal to us the nature of each form and its virational resonances. They are also symbolic of the underlying metaphysical principle of the inseperable relationship of the part to the whole. It is this principle of oneness underlying all geometry that permeates the architecture of all inseparability and union provides us with a continous reminder of our relationship to the wholea blueprint for the mind to the sacred foundation of all things created." We call this blueprint " Sacred Geometry Sacred Geometry is a term that is used by archaeologists, anthropologists, and geometricians. It includes the religious, philosohical, and spiritual beliefs that have surrounded geometry in many various cultures throughout history. It covers Pythagorean geometry as well as the relationships between organic curves and logarithmic curves. The "sacred" aspect of geometry has evolved as a result of different cultures. I have provided five different views of how different cultures have made geometry become sacred. Later, I will explain the meaning of certain numbers, as they play an important role in sacred geometry. A few examples of sacred sites will also be provided. These examples will provide you with a real sense of how sacred geometry is used in sacred sites.
