The team is located on WHOI 's Quissett Campus. The team has a staff of about 100, including 24 research scientists and 75 scientific and administrative support staff. USGS earth scientists explore and study many aspects of the underwater areas between shorelines and the deep ocean, off the U.S. East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and in parts of the Caribbean and Great Lakes. News To help in assessing the health of this fishery, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center have started a 2-year habitat-mapping program. The first phase of acoustic mapping was completed by USGS Woods Hole Science Center staff during a 4-week effort in March and April.

The Department of Geology and Geophysics is located in Weeks Hall (building 142 on the map found at this link). Quick link to Quaternary Lab Link to Glacial Songs The Quaternary Period includes the last 1.8 million years. One of the most significant aspects of this period is the expansion of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets collectively known as the "Ice Age". Evidence from the deep oceans indicate that there have been over two dozen cold (glacials) and warm (interglacial) periods during the last 2.4 million years. The most recent glaciation began about 125,000 years ago and climaxed about 21,000 years ago. At this time, over 30 percent of earth's surface was covered by ice, and sea level was at least 125 meters lower than present.
Geology Of Baja California s of geologic provinces and history, from Fred Metcalf's Baja Information Pages. http://math.ucr.edu/ftm/bajaPages/Geology.html
Extractions: B AJA CALIFORNIA can be divided into 5 provinces based on geologic landforms. They are: the tilted granitic fault blocks of the main mountain ranges, the broad flat coastal plains, the isolated coastal mountains, the fault block mountains and alluviated valleys of the Basin and Ranges, and the plateaus of the Volcanic Tablelands. The first three provinces are part of the Cretaceous collision of the North American and the Pacific Plate. The last two provinces are directly related to the opening of the Gulf of California. The tilted granitic fault blocks are represented by the Sierra Juarez and the Sierra San Pedro Martir which form the main granitic ranges of the State of Baja California and the Sierra La Laguna of the Cape region mountains. The main rock types in this province are granitic, metamorphic, and metavolcanic.
Extractions: The National Association of Geoscience Teachers was established in 1938. Its purpose is to foster improvement in the teaching of earth sciences at all levels of formal and informal instruction, to emphasize the cultural significance of the earth sciences and to disseminate knowledge in this field to the general public. NAGT organizes the technical program in geoscience education at every GSA Annual Meeting, and in this context also sponsors numerous technical sessions, workshops, and field trips. The organization also fosters advances in the teaching and learning of geoscience by means of scholarship aid to summer field-camp students, professional development workshops for geoscience faculty, its Distinguished Speaker Series, and the Journal of Geoscience Education and through its partnership with the National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists Distinguished Speakers Program Now Available Activities and Events surrounding the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake Centennial Other News and Announcements

Extractions: If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.

Extractions: Geologists are amazing. They know hundreds of words for different sorts of dirt and hundreds of words for things it does when left alone for a few million years. (By: Thomas Kettenring) You Might Be a Geologist If ... You own more pieces of quartz than underwear. Your rock collection weighs more than you do. Your rock garden is located inside your house You can pronounce the word "molybdenite" correctly on the first try. You don't think of "cleavage" the same way everyone else does. You have ever uttered the phrase "have you tried licking it" with no sexual connotations involved You think the primary function of road cuts is tourist attractions. You find yourself compelled to examine individual rocks in driveway gravel. You're planning on using a pick and shovel while you're on vacation. Your internet home page has pictures of your rocks. You will walk across eight lanes of freeway traffic to see if the outcrop on the other side of the highway is the same type of rock as the side you're parked on. You can point out where Tsumeb is on a world globe. The baggage handlers at the airport know you by name and refuse to help with your luggage.
