The Medical Sciences Division includes all the pre-clinical departments and clinical departments of the Medical School, plus Experimental Psychology. The division is a major centre for clinical and non-clinical research in the UK, having achieved very high scores in the relevant units of assessment in the HEFCE research assessment exercises. The annual grant income from external sources for the Medical Sciences Division is over £90 million. The post-genomic era will have a major impact on much of clinical medicine. Amongst the major clinical areas or specialities to benefit will be oncology. To explore this potential fully there is a need to maximise the interaction between clinicians and scientists. This will require close collaboration, ideally physical as well as intellectual. Oxford wishes to participate fully in this âbed to benchâ linkage in cancer studies and has particular opportunities to do so. There are already several strong programmes in cancer research and, furthermore, the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust is undertaking a £68m PFI project to consolidate its cancer services to the Churchill Hospital site, thus providing a unique opportunity for the creation of a major translational centre encompassing research, teaching and delivery of high quality cancer care.
