Home NCFM, LA seeks to educate and inform the state and local governments and the public in issues relating to male gender discrimination and propose solutions that are fair and equitable. http://www.ncfmla.org/
Extractions: The National Coalition of Free Men (NCFM) is a non-profit educational organization (established 1976) that looks at the ways sex discrimination affects men and boys. NCFM's Los Angeles chapter formed in 2000 to raise awareness about men's issues at the local and State level. Men are frequently discriminated against in family courts, child custody, domestic violence policies, the selective service, criminal sentencing, prostate cancer and public health policies, auto and life insurance, and more. While both men and women experience sex discrimination, anti-male discrimination is largely ignored by government, academia and the media, and it feeds into the larger problem of gender stereotypes and male disposability. We therefore use legal, educational and organizational approaches to raise awareness about men's issues as part of a growing, global men's movement. Betty Friedan A interview by Tom Knapp about the state of the women's movement. http://www.rambles.net/friedan_gender.html
Extractions: All issues are women's issues. All women's issues are men's issues. The barriers which once separated the feminist movement and the male hierarchy are falling. Betty Friedan, a founder of the women's movement in the 1960s, said the battle no longer belongs in the bedroom. "We must get to the roots of the problem," she said. "I am tired of marching to take back the night." Friedan, whose book The Feminine Mystique is credited with starting the modern women's movement 30 years ago, delivered a highly charged, highly political talk at Millersville (Pa.) University, where Friedan's energetic and rambling speech followed a ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the MU Women's Center. Key issues facing women today include child care, health care, gun control and the economy, Friedan said. "If we cannot solve some of these problems, women's rights will not survive," she said. "One good child care center in a community is worth 10, 100 marches and slogans." Friedan said the women's movement is at a "critical time." Although she congratulated Millersville on its progress, she said, "I hope you won't waste a lot of time meandering in the rhetoric of 20 years ago. In the last few years, it seems to me that the women's movement has undergone a transformation, sort of a paradigm shift that we're not all quite aware of yet. We can stop wallowing in the victim stage."

Extractions: EFF and other civil liberties groups ask that a blue ribbon be worn or displayed to show support for the essential human right of free speech. This fundamental building block of free society, affirmed by the U.S. Bill of Rights in 1791, and by the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, has been sacrificed in the 1996 Telecom Bill. The Blue Ribbon will be a way to raise awareness of these issues, from locally to globally, and for the quiet voice of reason to be heard.

Should parents be able to select the gender of their child? Would it be ethical for people with fertility problems to choose which fertilized embryos get implanted and have the rest discarded as being the "wrong" gender? According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, a group which establishes ethical guidelines for fertility clinics, the answers to those question is "Yes." Many fertility specialists around the country were shocked to hear this announcement, released in a letter written by John Robertson, an ethicist and lawyer at the University of Texas who is currently the acting head of the organization. Some, however, will be offering the service immediately and report having received many requests for it over the years. This position does not quite represent a decision by the ethics committee of the group, because the group was unable to meet in September because of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington D.C. Robertson did, however, say that he consulted with others and felt that the letter reflected the group's position. The previous position of the group, decided in 1999, was that such selection "should be discouraged."
