Extractions: AFRICAN LUCY compiled by Dee Finney 2-20-04 - DREAM - IT'S STARTING - I was in Wisconsin, near Eau Claire. I went to visit my mother-in-law Lucy B. at her farmhouse. We were having a nice chat and then she told me that five of her sons had spun themselves to death to commit suicide the week before. There were no funerals for them because it was a sin to commit suicide. I thought that was atrocious. I went out for a walk and when I came back, the house was full of people who were all standing around crying. I was really puzzled, so I started asking people why everyone was crying. Nobody would tell me and that was making me angry. Finally I saw a priest standing in the midst of the crowd and he had tears in his eyes too. I said "Why is everyone standing around like somebody died? He didn't answer either, but more or less looked towards the other room. So I looked into the other room and there was my mother-in-law laying on her back with her eyes closed on top of the dining room table. People were sitting and standing around her seemingly dead body.

Rather than primarily serving as academic, encyclopedic, or anthropological resources, they are often self-promotional, but several provide excellent information and rigorous documentation. This is a small collection of such pages produced primarily by Africans, along with some material produced by others. Most often, these African ethnic group home pages are a direct expression of individual members of the group, but in several cases represent an academic, official, or institutional point of view. If you are looking for an "objective" presentation, these links may not be the best sources for your work. Nevertheless, most have very good cultural, historical, and other background information, and many provide links to related sites that you may also find useful. Kampala is now the modern, bustling capital of a new Uganda, a country with one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Insecure Areas Parts of Uganda should be considered off-limits due to a highly volatile security situation. Rebels in the north are responsible for many crimes against civilians. Ethnic conflict and banditry are common irritants in the northeastern Karamoja region and in neighbouring Katakwi district. Sections of the country's mountainous west bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo previously considered insecure - including the Ruwenzori mountains and the Bwindi National Park - have been secured by the government, Nebbi district being the exception.

History B The number of distinctive languages spoken in Africa is open to debate. Some experts put the number at around 2,000, while others count more than 3,000. Virtually all of these languages originated in Africa. The most widely spoken indigenous African language is Swahili, spoken by nearly 50 million Africans, followed by Hausa and Yoruba, each with more than 20 million speakers. Several languages have only a few thousand speakers. Scholars generally recognize four African language families: Niger-Congo, Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, and Khoisan. Most Africans are multilingual, meaning that they speak two or more different languages. Few can afford to be otherwise, since daily life often brings people into contact with others who speak different languages. For instance, more than 50 languages are spoken in Nigeria alone. Tanzania, with significantly fewer people, has nearly 100 languages, including at least one from each of the four language families.

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO PROTECT THE LAND Women on the front lines. In many developing countries its mainly women who work the land. Often these women are among the poorest people, who most need support. Yet in the past, women have frequently been excluded from land conservation and development projects that directly affect their livelihoods. As a result of "top-down" approaches to development that ignore the views of local people, many attempts to protect the Earths life-giving soil have failed. WHAT ON EARTH WERE THEY TALKING ABOUT?
