Extractions: Course Prerequisites: CIS 47 is an introductory course for which there are no specific prerequisites. Familiarity with Windows is recommended. Class Format: CIS 47 will have two tracks designed to accommodate both beginning and experienced programmers. Each lecture will be broken up into a basic section and an advanced section. Following the basic lecture, beginning students may go directly to the lab and get started on their programs. Those who opt to stay will benefit from an informal discussion of additional VB features and programming concepts. Lab assignments will contain a subset of more advanced problems to complement this material. Course Overview: Visual Basic is an object oriented, event driven and graphically based computer language. As such it differs radically from a so-called procedural language like C where none of these concepts are part of the language. Programming in VB includes essentially two separate processes. First the programmer designs a user interface using pre-made components such as forms, buttons, labels and dialog boxes. Once the interface has been created the programmer writes code to handle a user's actions (e.g. clicking on a button). This second phase involves the classic elements of program construction: variables, subroutines, control structures, looping, arrays, input and output and algorithm design.

Read About Patrick Krawec's VB.NET Control Array Program VB 6 has one thing that VB.NET lacks and it has generated a lot of interest here at About Visual Basic: Control Arrays ! Believe it or not, there have been five different ideas about how to emulate the handy and effective VB 6 control array in VB.NET. (Six, if you count Microsoft's version.) To the best of my knowledge, VB.NET 2005 still won't support control arrays. Microsoft says they're just not necessary and you can do everything you might want to without them. Microsoft is "in denial" about a lot of things as they continue to work through their VB 6 to VB.NET transition. Patrick Krawec, a programmer at Inovision Software Solutions, has added solution number six! This one is distinguished by ease of use ... really, there's just one main rule you have to follow to make Patrick's idea work. To see Patrick's idea in action ....

Originally devised as an easy-to-use programming language, it became widespread on home microcomputers in the , and remains popular to this day in a handful of heavily evolved dialects. It was devised in by Profs. John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz of Dartmouth College BASIC's name, coined in classic, computer science tradition to produce a nice acronym , stands for B eginner's A ll-purpose S ymbolic I nstruction C ode , tied to the name of an unpublished paper by the language's co-inventor, Thomas Kurtz (the name thus having no relation to C.K. Ogden's series " Basic English "). Several versions of the popular Jargon File once claimed that BASIC is a backronym created in the (recent versions have corrected this). Evidence from the original Dartmouth BASIC manual ( ) show this to be untrue, but numerous online dictionaries and reference works on the Internet have now proliferated the earlier Jargon File's error.

The Internet was a 25-year overnight success. Even though it has been around since the late 1960's, it wasn't until the mid 90s, with the advent of the graphical web browser, that the Internet took off like a rocket. Since then, businesses started scrambling for ways to send database information around the globe from servers to browser clients. Wait a minute! A centralized server sending data to a client connected to it? This sounds like the 60's all over again, right? Centralized main frame computers talking to light clients. The world is migrating to mainframe servers serving client browsers connected to them. Information centralized on mainframe servers. Hmmm. Where have we heard this before? So now programmers need to not only access relational data sources, but non-relational data as well. As we mentioned, Microsoft's approach is to provide a common method to get at data stored in various formats. They think it makes sense to focus on the access to the data rather than to the physical layout of the database itself. After all, what if we need to get at data in a relational database, a legacy system, an Excel spreadsheet, a web site, some text files, and e-mail? And what if these are stored in various locations? Rather than change the world to conform to a single data structure, we want to change the way we retrieve data stored in various structures. Makes sense.

These Visual Basic .NET programming courses are heavily dependent on the immediate, practical application of its ideas in order for students to fully grasp them. In addition to the more measurable goals of these courses, by the end of these courses, students should be able to write simple utility programs, and be able to act as a communication bridge between senior corporate management and application programmers.

Extractions: I remember Lollapalooza when Lollapalooza was Lollapalooza. In the mid-'90s, the traveling daylong alternative-rock festival captured the zeitgeist of a generation the media called it "X" typifying its left-leaning politics, love of challenging genre-crossing sounds and unifying sense of community. The Lollapalooza that was reinvented Saturday and Sunday as a two-day "destination festival" in Grant Park had none of that. It was just a big concert full of up-and-coming modern-rock acts, with a few older legends, very little hip-hop and no truly edgy sounds or messages. As such, however, Lollapalooza 2005 was a smashing success: well-organized, fan-friendly and benefitting from the exquisite setting of Hutchinson Field, with the backdrop of the skyline to the west and the beauty of Lake Michigan to the east. And promoters promise that it will only get better, becoming the annual gem of Chicago's summer concert season. With overcast skies and a lake breeze keeping things reasonably cool on Saturday, most of the highlights on the four main stages came early. Chicago's lovably Beatlesque rockers the Redwalls kicked things off at noon at the northern end of the field, displaying a bit of swagger acquired from Oasis while touring with the Britpop giants in the U.K.

Extractions: This is the text of a revised funding proposal that we sent to DARPA in August 1999. In March, we heard that at least an earlier version of the proposal was accepted by DARPA; the work has begun late 1999 and will hopefully last two years, although we've only received funding for the first year (through October 2000). We're keeping our fingers crossed for the rest. Please look at the Computer Programming for Everybody (CP4E) home page and the EDU-SIG home page (Python in Education Special Interest Group). This is where the current project status is described and/or will be discussed, and where you'll find pointers to more resources. Note: I have made one change to the text of the proposal: At the request of some supporters of other languages, I've withdrawn a language comparison chart that contained highly personal and sometimes unfounded opinions of other languages. The table was being used out of context in a way that some found objectionable. (Not all of the table is disputed, but it seems wiser not to engage in direct language comparisons without a lot more documentation.) I've also removed some administrative details from the text and made some minor changes to accommodate HTML. I apologize for the writing style, which is at times more representative of funding proposals than most of the prose I write. I would like to thank Jeremy Hylton, Barry Warsaw, Al Vezza, Bob Kahn, Randy Pausch and David Beazley for contributions and suggestions that made this a successful proposal.
