Extractions: Click here for previous book reviews The Last Run is a story about the 77-foot fishing boat La Conte which gets lost in a fierce storm in the ironically named Fairweather Grounds in Alaska. In the first half of the book you get a good feel for the rough and tumble characters that make up the crew of the La Conte . Jail time, divorce and alcoholism abound. In the second half of the book you are introduced to the brave Coastguardsmen who end up rescuing the crew. The rescue scenes are incredibly vivid. You can almost hear the tortured howl of the Sikorsky Jayhawk helicopters as the Coast Guard crews attempt to locate and rescue the crew of La Conte Search Now: La Conte and the rescuers are based out of Sitka and much of the story takes place there. Places like Hoonah, Elfin Cove, Pelican and Coronation Island are frequently mentioned locations. Definitely a fun read if you've sailed to these places in SE Alaska. Highly recommended! Extractions: "I still believe in god, but god no longer believes in me" Wayne Hussey, taken from the song Wasteland The Mission were popular when I was at school, none of my friends liked them, and although I was interested in their music and in the Goth scene in general, I was never brave enough to find out more about them, having no money didn't help much either. It was several years later when a friend lent me some of their stuff and once I saw the Tower Of Strength video I was hooked. The Mission were born from the ashes of a band called The Sisters Of Mercy, when the Sisters split up two of the ex-band members (Wayne Hussey and Craig Brown) decided to form their own band called The Sisterhood. This annoyed the remaining member of the Sisters (Andrew Eldritch) who thought that this name was just a wee bit too similar to his band's name, and it so happened that is was also the name of the Sister's Fan club, which didn't help matters, and so he very quickly produced an album (Gift 1986) and a single (Giving Ground) under The Sisterhood so that the others could not use that name.
