The best place to begin is with yourself and a few friends who are equally interested in four wheel drive vehicles. Excellent possibilities for new members are persons who have an interest that can best be served by four wheel drive. Among these are hunters, fishermen, camera enthusiasts, and rock hounds, just to name a few. But before you start securing members, get your club going with a small group of interested and dedicated people. It is far more important that the club have enthusiasm for its beginning than a large membership. If the initial group is right, the club will grow on its own inertia. Your first formal meeting will be long and technical. But nothing you do that night will be more important than the reasons you determine are the purposes for your club. These will be written in your constitution and will establish the character of your club. A sample of a few of the purposes might go like this: To promote the sport and past time of four wheel drive travel in all phases.

However, careful management is required to make sure the quality of recreational fishing is maintained. Recent research at Ningaloo Marine Park has shown that there are more than twice as many emperor, for example, in some sanctuary zones than in the neighbouring general use zones where recreational fishing is allowed. The management plan permits line fishing from the shore along approximately 70 per cent of the coastline of the Ningaloo Marine Park. In recognition of the popularity of beach fishing in the park, special purpose (shore-based activities) zones have been placed adjacent to some sanctuary zones so that line fishing from the shore can continue. In addition, recreational line fishing from boats is permitted in 72 per cent of the marine park and 93 per cent of the marine management area.
Extractions: El Mirage is an area administered by the Bureau of Land Management with cooperation from the state of California Parks and Recreation and a number of southern California counties. The focus at El Mirage is recreational and off-highway vehicle use as well as varied activities on the El Mirage Dry Lake. The area is divided into four general sections; the dry lake bed, the basin, the Shadow Mountains, and the Twin Hills. The riding area is between US 395 and the Los Angeles County line west of the town of Adelanto (CA). Most visitors access the area from Adelanto from US 395 by taking Crippen Avenue west and following the signs toward the town of El Mirage. East of the main El Mirage community, Mountain View Road goes north from El Mirage Road into the El Mirage OHV Recreation Area. There is a sign at this intersection directing visitors into the area. From Palmdale (CA), take Palmdale Boulevard east to 240th Street and turn north (left). At Avenue P, turn east (right). At the San Bernardino County line, Avenue P becomes El Mirage Road. Follow El Mirage Road through the community of El Mirage to Mountain View Road and follow the signs north to the riding area. There is a perimeter fence in place to discourage trespass from the riding area into the community of El Mirage. Most of the visitors ride motorcycles or ATVs , or tour in four-wheel drive vehicles . There is a road network in place so visitors can camp in most of the sections of El Mirage. The area is also used extensively for competitive racing events and commercial filming by permit. Because of its unique flat surface, the El Mirage Lake Bed is the destination for many visitors. There is a lot of ultra-light and other aircraft activity that would not be found in other riding areas.

This internationally recognized sanctuary, a 360-hectare bird sanctuary on Westham Island in the Fraser River, is a refuge year-round. Forest transfer processes in Queensland Outstanding natural values led to the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area being placed on the World Heritage list in 1988, and are the reason for providing the highest possible protection for these and surrounding State lands. In November 2000, the Queensland Government announced the intention to transfer native State forests and timber reserves in the Wet Tropics area to the protected area estate. This initiative will provide permanent protection within the Queensland Parks system of over 480,000 hectares of native forests identified as having high conservation values. The transfer of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area state forests will finalise a long-standing commitment by the Queensland Government to provide a secure and high level conservation tenure for the significant lands within and adjacent to the internationally renowned Wet Tropics World Heritage Area. The State forest transfer increases protection for nearly 50 percent of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

South East Queensland Forests Agreement (SEQFA) The use of protected areas is usually determined on the basis of what is appropriate and sustainable for each area, within the guidelines established by the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NCA) Tenure, management plans, regulations and permits all play a part in regulating and defining access and use. The only instance where access is predominantly determined by tenure is in the case of national park (scientific). Bunyaville recreation area After the transfer of the SEQFA lands to protected area tenure most recreational activities will continue to be permitted, including four-wheel driving, trail biking, mountain biking, hang-gliding, bush walking and camping. However, the NCA takes a precautionary approach to the management of national parks and does not support the introduction of non-native animals. Therefore, recreational activities such as horse riding and dog walking are not permitted in national parks. The uses matrix displays a range of uses as they will be managed on the SEQFA areas once transferred to protected area. It should be remembered that management and access are influenced by a wide range of factors including sustainability and setting appropriateness, and are not only influenced by tenure type. All areas may be subject to seasonal, safety and/or maintenance closures.

People use braided rivers for fishing, camping, boating, kayaking, wildlife watching, and so on. The tourism industry in the Upper Waitaki Basin includes activities like fishing tours, home-stays, and eco-tourism. However, braided river birds are very vulnerable to disturbance by humans and their activities. For example, if riverbed birds are disturbed from their nests, eggs and chicks can be cooked by high temperatures or chilled in low temperatures, they can be run over, or be eaten by pet dogs and cats. Recreational users can minimise the risk to nesting birds by driving on marked tracks, learning about bird behaviours, responding appropriately to bird behaviour, keeping pets off riverbeds or dogs on a leash.
Extractions: JULY 13, 2005 Mr. Chairmen, thank you for the opportunity to present the views of the Department of the Interior on motorized recreational use on Federal lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the National Park Service (NPS). We appreciate the opportunity to discuss this very important issue and the ongoing efforts of both agencies to address the needs of motorized access and other stakeholders to maximize the visitor experience while preserving and protecting these lands for the use and enjoyment of future generations. Background Increasing Expectations and Impacts on Local Communities The NPS has also experienced an increase. For example, in 1980, when there were 331 units administered by the NPS consisting of over 70 million acres, approximately 42 park units were categorized as recreational parks (national recreation areas, national seashores, etc.). Those units reported more than 96 million recreation visits. Twenty years later, in 2000, the National Park System had grown to over 78 million acres and recreational parks received approximately 104 million recreation visits. More recently, in 2004, while the total number of acres managed by the NPS increased only marginally, the total number of visits to this category of parks increased to almost 107 million.

Stretching from just south of the Nueces County line on the north to the northern end of Willacy County on the south, the National Seashore includes portions of Kleberg, Kenedy, and Willacy Counties, with the majority of the park in Kenedy County. Padre Island is the longest natural barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico coastlines. The chain continues south to include Brazos Island at the mouth of the Rio Grande, separated by the Brazos Santiago Pass, and north to include Mustang Island, once separated by Corpus Christi Pass, and St. Joseph's, Matagorda, and Galveston Islands. Mansfield Channel, a shipping channel dredged across Padre to Port Mansfield in Willacy County, breaks the natural length of the island. Figure 2. Map of Padre Island National Seashore. (click on image for an enlargement in a new window) Padre Island divides into two geographic areas: North and South Padre. Mansfield Channel serves as the physical separation between the two areas. Padre Island National Seashore lies largely on North Padre Island, leaving the extreme northern end of North Padre and almost all of South Padre in private ownership. Land immediately adjacent to the park boundaries on the north and across the Mansfield Channel on the south remains undeveloped. Privately owned land on both ends of Padre Island currently supports various types of development including subdivisions of single-family houses, high-rise condominiums and hotels, and assorted retail and service businesses supporting the regional tourism industry.
