Extractions: 5. In 2001, the FSS handled 135,000 criminal cases You might be surprised to realise that it wasn't until the early part of the nineteenth century that hair, blood, fingerprints were used as evidence to pinpoint the whereabouts or guilt of a criminal. The use of scientific practices within the criminal and legal process is called forensic science, and its success in aiding the legal system in the UK led eventually to the establishment of The Forensic Science Service (FSS). The FSS is an agency of the Home Office dedicated to the application of forensic science to aid law enforcement organisations in the UK. The FSS has a world-wide reputation for DNA research and development, and its purpose is to serve the administration of justice principally by offering scientific support in the investigation of crime and expert evidence to the courts. The FSS provides a national service from seven labs across the UK, and works primarily for the 43

Andrew Davidhazy Instructor of photographic science and technology at the Rochester Institute of Technology. A specialist in high speed, infrared, ultraviolet, panoramic, peripheral, and forensic. http://www.rit.edu/~andpph
Extractions: I came to RIT as a student in 1961 and for over 40 years, the reason for me being and remaining here was the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences . At one time the School was part of the College of Graphic Arts and Photography but in 1987 or so CGAP was absorbed by a new college. The Photographic Science group decided to form their own center around that time and departed the organization. Now they are part of the College of Science. Then, in February 1998, a move started to again re-organize the School. The School of Photographic Arts and Sciences itself, a truly unique organization (much like Kodak , the Bauhaus or Life magazine) spawned from science, technology and the arts, was, in fact re-organized into smaller departments. A global photographic organization was fragmented into more commonplace subdivisions. In May 1999 the School's motion picture, video and animation components formed a separate, new, school. SPAS is the poorer for it much like when Photographic Science decided to follow their own star. It is no secret that this process of fragmentation of the qualities in the school that brought me here in the first place has been a personal disappointment but to my chagrin the university does not seem to have suffered much because of it.

Kennedy. "I didn't know anything about it," she said. "It's really interesting. I'm going to look into history a bit more now." Katrina, a 15-year-old sophomore from Georgia, Vermont, is one of 24 students on a "Who Killed JFK? Forensic Team" that built a replica of Dealey Plaza in Dallas. It includes a motorcade and to-scale figurines. Details of that tragic day on November 22, 1963, are reconstructed all the way down to Jacqueline Kennedy's clothing and the time on the clock atop the Texas School Book Depository. The students are in an introductory class at the Center for Technology in Essex, where they are earning credits toward their high school diplomas by taking project-based courses that combine traditional academic subjects. "JFK seemed like a natural with the importance of history, the math of scaling, and then the problem-solving and critical thinking skills," said teacher Tom Keck, who didn't analyze the historical day much himself until a few years ago when he took a teaching workshop in using forensic science in the classroom.

Policies The School of Environmental Science offers several degrees in environmental science, including the flagship 4-year Bachelor of Environmental Science. Our educational strength lies in the fact that we have actively maintained a balance in pursuing both 'green' and 'brown' teaching and research in environmental science. That is, we combine the areas of environmental management and policy with relevant aspects of environmental systems and engineering in an integrated degree programme which also provides students with the flexibility to specialise in areas of their interests. Moreover, at Murdoch University, our students can pursue their interests in allied areas such as conservation biology, marine science, chemistry, energy studies, or extractive metallurgy. Consequently, our graduates are well-suited to a rapidly changing public and industry sector. READ MORE >> Courses on offer at the school.
