Extractions: Sponsored by The Decathlon in Olympic History Table of Contents: The Jim Thorpe Story When King Gustav V of Sweden presented awards at the 1912 Olympic Games of Stockholm, he proclaimed to the decathlon winner, an American Indian named Jim Thorpe, as the world's top athlete. "You sir, are the world's greatest athlete." Incidentally, Jim is purported to have replied, "Thanks, King" to the Swedish monarch, a story, true or not, which itself has become part of the Thorpe saga. Ever since, the Olympic decathlon champion or world record holder has been dubbed "the World's Greatest Athlete." And rightly so, since the decathlon is the only objective test of all around athletic ability. Decathletes must contest ten separate events and have those performances tallied on a standard scoring table. The decathlon measures basic sporting ability like jumping, sprinting and throwing. Within the backdrop and rules of track and field, decathlon champions must exhibit, the 4 S's: speed, spring, strength and stamina. Since 1912 great decathlon champions like Bob Mathias, Rafer Johnson, Bruce Jenner and Daley Thompson and others have become household names. But they all owe much to the legend of Thorpe.

Football (soccer) portal Football is a ball game played between two teams of eleven players, each attempting to win by scoring more goals than their opponent. Football is played predominantly with the feet, but players may use any part of their body except their hands and arms to propel the ball; the exceptions to this are the two goalkeepers , who are the only players allowed to handle the ball in the field of play. The sport is also known by other names in some parts of the English -speaking world, usually soccer or association football . These names are often used to distinguish the game from other codes of football , since the word "football" may be used to refer to several quite different games. Football is played at a professional level all over the world, and millions of people regularly go to a football stadium to follow their favourite team, whilst millions more avidly watch the game on television. A very large number of people also play football at an amateur level.

After receiving the recognition of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1954, the Federation of Malaya Olympic Council, as it was then known, sent a contingent of 33 athletes from 6 sports to participate in the Olympic Games in 1956 in Melbourne. Since then the Olympic Council of Malaysia, as it is known since 1964, has been participating in all the Olympic Games, except the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. The Olympic Contingent of the Federation of Malaya to the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games comprised six athletes, two swimmers, 18 Hockey players, three Weightlifters and four shooters. There was only one female athlete in the Contingent, Ms. Annie Choong, who participated in Athletics. Amongst the Olympians were Koh Eng Tong, the 1950 British Empire Weightlifting gold medallist in the Featherweight Division and Tan Kim Bee, the silver medallist in the Light Heavyweight Division. The Hockey team finished 9th out of 12 teams. The Chef de Mission was Mr. H.M. De Souza (Hockey) and the Flag Bearer was Tan Eng Bee (Weightlifting)

Tug-of-war was always contested as a part of the track and field athletics programme, although it is now considered a separate sport. The Olympic champions were as follows: 1900: a combined Swedish/Danish team; 1904: an American club team representing the Milwaukee Athletic Club; 1906: Germany/Switzerland; 1908: a British team from the City of London Police Club; 1912: Sweden; and 1920: Great Britain. Golf has been on the Olympic programme twice, in 1900 and 1904. There were two golf events in 1900 - one for gentlemen and one for ladies. Golf is one of the world's most popular sports, being played in well over 100 nations world-wide. Golf also has a long history, as it origins can be traced back several centuries, and it has had organised international competitions since the mid-19th century. In the last decade golf has made entreaties to be returned to the Olympic programme. Rugby football is one of the earliest forms of football in which the ball is carried rather than kicked. It developed in Great Britain in the mid-19th century. Originally, rugby league was considered the professional sport and rugby union the amateur one, but in 1995 the International Rugby Board made rugby union an open sport, allowing professional competition. Rugby union football was held at the Olympics in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924.

Extractions: Putting New York's Olympic Bid First Home NewYorkGames.org Report Like its World's Fairs , New York's Olympic bid had its focus outside of Manhattan. With too little space to properly host the world, Flushing Meadows in Queens was the centerpiece of the serious bid for the 1984 Olympics. It was the focal point for other potential bids as well. NYC2012's Manhattan-centric approach is well outside the historic pattern. Indeed, this is only the first effort to host a world event in Manhattan since the disastrous 1892 World's Fair bid . New York was considered the heavy favorite to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the Americas, but the financial backers insisted on using Central Park. The controversy fatally wounded New York's chances, and Congress gave the fair to Chicago. The only event of this nature held in Manhattan was the 1853 Crystal Palace Exposition, though this smaller event (if fit on today's Bryant Park) is not considered a proper World's Fair.

Extractions: June 2, 2004 According to Olympic legend, Ron Clarke almost gave his right arm for the honour of carrying the Melbourne Olympic torch on its opening ceremony lap and lighting the Olympic cauldron. Fragments of magnesium spitting from the flame singed his arm and burnt holes in his white T-shirt. The combination of that and what Clarke insists were the over-zealous ministrations of a first-aid attendant in bandaging his arm from wrist to elbow led to the conclusion that he had suffered far more serious burns than he let on. The fact is, says Clarke, he would have given his right arm to run in the 1956 Games. An ill-timed three-month stint of national service duties deprived the then world junior record-holder for the mile from making a stronger bid to make the team as an athlete. (Clarke went on to run in two Olympic Games when he revived his career as a senior athlete.) "It was a great honour to be selected as the final torchbearer," says Clarke, now Mayor of the Gold Coast. "It was very exciting, but I would have given my right arm to be there as a competitor."

Some are obvious - like Cathy Freeman's golden run in Sydney and Muhammad Ali's lighting of the cauldron in Atlanta. Others are a matter of personal preference. Athens was no different. In almost every sport there were memories to cherish. From the feats of Ian Thorpe Michael Phelps and Jodie Henry in the pool to unforgettable victories by Kelly Holmes and Hicham El Guerrouj on the track, every winner had a story to tell. And so did most of the losers. Losers like Jana Pittman , Wilson Kipketer and Alex Popov, who weren't losers at all, but were winners without gold medals. For the Greeks, these Games were a triumph. Not because they were the best ever, but because in the main, they went without a hitch. Because, despite the doubters, they opened on schedule, and because - perhaps against all odds in today's world - for a little more than two weeks they recaptured the spirit of the ancient Olympics. The centrepiece of these Games was the thoroughly modern stadium with its Santiago Calatrava-designed roof.
