Welcome To Professor Carlin's Homepage! Biology and nonmajorsÂ’ Fish and fisheries courses in the spring of 2006. Dr. Carlin maintains the American Fisheries Society Genetics section http://marcus.whitman.edu/~carlinjl/
Extractions: Originally from Indiana, Joel Carlin received his B.S. in marine biology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a M.S. in zoology from Louisiana State University, where he studied salamander evolution in the southeastern U.S. Joel then became a marine biologist for the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources for three years, where he worked on stock identification in the newly developed wreckfish fishery. He then received a Ph.D. in fisheries from the University of Florida for his work on the systematics and population genetics of groupers, a diverse subfamily of commercially valuable tropical fishes. You can consult his curriculum vitae for details about his career. Dr. Carlin currently teaches Biol 111 Biological Principles (F'05); he will teach the majors' Marine Biology and non-majors' Fish and Fisheries courses in the spring of 2006. Previous Whitman classes include conservation biology, island biogeography, evolution, genetics, and introductory plant biology. Dr. Carlin taught genetics recitations for three years while a graduate student in Louisiana, and later taught conservation biology for the University of Florida honors program. Dr. Carlin has mentored undergraduate projects on an adaptive radiation of snails from African rift lakes, phylogenetic reconstruction of west African HIV strains, and speciation in tropical plants. Additional teaching interests include international biodiversity, marine biology, fisheries biology, herpetology and bioethics. He also participates in talks to schoolchildren and the community. ACCRU - Programs for wildlife and fisheries research and learning programs throughout Alberta A comprehensive suite of wildlife and fisheries courses are offered by http://www.accru.rr.ualberta.ca/programs.asp
Extractions: Home About Events People ... Contact ACCRU provides a collaborative framework and support for wildlife and fisheries research and learning programs throughout Alberta and the Canadian North. These include: Research ACCRU facilitates and supports the following independently-managed and funded initiatives: Alberta Biodiversity Grant Program The ACA Grants in Biodiversity Program, funded by the Alberta Conservation Association , provides research funds to outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows doing research in Alberta. The mandate of the program is to increase knowledge of the flora and fauna of Alberta. Alberta Forest Biomonitoring Program The Alberta Forest Biodiversity Monitoring Program is being developed by natural resource management and research organizations in Alberta to help government and industry meet commitments to report on the status and trends of biological diversity. Coordinated implementation is intended, with participation of the natural resources sector (government and industry) and National Parks. Adaptive Management Experiment To help managers develop innovative management solutions, the AME Team has adopted active adaptive management as a scientific framework. This approach treats management strategies as experiments, allowing an evaluation of ecological and socio-economic response to management actions.
BANGLAPEDIA: Fauna In the faculty of fisheries courses related to fisheries and aquaculture areoffered including biology of fishes, water ecology, aquaculture management, http://banglapedia.search.com.bd/HT/F_0044.htm
Extractions: Web banglapedia.search.com.bd Large View Fauna Bangladesh is situated within the subtropical belt and has a wide variety of ecological conditions. In addition to a long sea coast, numerous rivers and their tributaries, lakes, haors, baors, ponds and other forms of wetlands, there are lowland evergreen forests of tropical nature, semi-evergreen forest, hill forests, moist deciduous forests, swamps, and flat lands with tall grasses. Because of expansion of agriculture and industry many original vegetation of most areas have lost their original characteristics and ecological features, which affected adversely both the fauna and flora of the country. The country possesses a wide range of invertebrates and vertebrates in its aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The invertebrate fauna of the country has not yet been fully recorded. However, there has been a fairly good stocktaking of the vertebrate fauna. Invertebrate fauna Of the lower invertebrates, some parasitic species of protozoans, freshwater and marine sponges and corals, and many parasitic nematodes and helminths have been described. Among the homopteran insects only about 30 aphid species under 20 genera have so far been listed in the country. This group is of major economic importance both for the direct damage they cause to crops and for the viral diseases they transmit. Wind currents disperse winged adults. There are about 20,000 species of bees under 19 families worldwide. In Bangladesh 18 species have so far been reported, of which 4 are honeybees.
Mekong River Commission Evaluating the size and value of the capture fisheries and recognising trendsand patterns in English, statistics and databases, and fisheries courses. http://www.mrcmekong.org/programmes/fishery/fish_annual_report/fish_6.htm
Extractions: Khmer Lao Thai Vietnamese ... Contents Capture fisheries make by far the largest contribution to the Mekong's fisheries. Evaluating the size and value of the capture fisheries and recognising trends and patterns in the catch provide invaluable indications of the both the health of the river and its fish stocks. This is essential information in fisheries planning and development. Many of the component's activities in 2004 were the continuation of work initiated during 2003. Results from some of these were presented at the Asian Fisheries Forum in Penang (Dec 2004) and at an FAO-sponsored nutrition workshop in Bangkok. The main studies undertaken during the last year were: Catch monitoring: Fishers' catches were monitored basinwide in a trial to establish systems for detecting trends in the fishery. Over 100 fishers, using a wide range of gears, were included. The study also provided valuable field experience for agency staff and facilitated agency-fisher dialogue. This work will continue as a long-term monitoring exercise using the fishers who provided the best quality data in each country.

Humboldt: Fish required courses and other requirements for the fisheries major and minor. take course work outside the selected fisheries option (students in the http://www.humboldt.edu/~catalog/programs/fish.html
Extractions: The Program The overall goal of the Fisheries Biology Program is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and motivation required to ensure the conservation of fish and aquatic resources that are faced with increasing societal demands and increasing loss of habitat. We stress development of a field-based understanding of the relationships between freshwater and marine fishes and the habitats upon which they depend, but our program is broad enough to provide specialized training in fish population dynamics and fishery management, restoration ecology, systematics, marine and freshwater aquaculture, fish health management, water pollution biology and wastewater utilization, and aquarium sciences. Each of these areas has its own important role to play in the overall conservation of fish resources. Fisheries Biology students have on-campus facilities for hands-on studies: a recirculating freshwater fish hatchery, rearing ponds, spawning pens, an artificial stream, and modern laboratories for study of fish genetics, pathology, taxonomy, ecology, and age and growth. Also on campus is the California Cooperative Fishery Research Unit, supported by both state and federal government, and a large fish museum collection.
