As a complement to our Mi'kmaq language information , we would like to share our collection of indexed links about the Mi'kmaq people and various aspects of their society. Mi'kmaq history is interesting and important, but the Mi'kmaq are still here today, too, and we try to feature modern writers as well as traditional folklore, contemporary artwork as well as museum pieces, and the issues and struggles of today as well as the tragedies of yesterday. Suggestions for new links are always welcome Official homepages of individual Mi'kmaq Nations, with information about tribal leadership, services, and events:

Extractions: Mi'kmaq (Mi'kmawi'simk, Mi'kmaw, Micmac, Mikmaq) Language: The Mi'kmaq language, Mi'kmawi'simk or Mikmawisimk, is an Algonquian language spoken by 8000 Indians in the Canadian Maritimes (particularly Nova Scotia) and a few US communities. The Mi'kmaq dialect spoken in Quebec is called Restigouche (or Listuguj) and can be hard for other native speakers to understand. Mi'kmaq is written alphabetically today, but in the past it was written in pictographs . Though these pictographs were modified by Jesuit missionaries, who used them to help Mi'kmaq converts remember Christian prayers, they probably predated European contact. Micmac hieroglyphics do not resemble Ancient Egyptian or Mayan hieroglyphs see here for an explanation of these different writing systems. Mi'kmaq is not linguistically related to Ancient Egyptian or any other semitic languages, this data was faked . The Mi'kmaq language is entirely native to the New World and is related to other major North American Indian languages like Lenape Ojibwe , and Cree . Although Mi'kmaq is one of the healthier American Indian languages, the number of children learning the language has been in decline since the '70's. Mi'kmaq educators are working to reverse this trend before they find their language, like so many others, on the brink of extinction.

Newfoundland Mi'kmaq oral tradition holds that the Mi'kmaq were living in Newfoundland prior to European contact. There is some historical evidence that the Mi'kmaq were living in Newfoundland by the 16th century, and by the 17th century there are increasing references to the Mi'kmaq in the historical record." These Facts For Kids section are being added in response to the many emails we've been receiving from young people looking for information about the Micmacs for school or home-schooling reports. We encourage students, especially older kids, to look through our main Mi'kmaq language and culture pages for more in-depth information about the tribe, but here are some straightforward answers to the questions we are most often asked by children, with Micmac pictures and links we believe are especially suitable for all ages. How do you pronounce "Mi'kmaq?" What does it mean? It's pronounced MICK-mack, more or less. In their own language, Mi'kmaq people pronounce it more like MEE-gmakh, with a long first vowel and the final consonant further back in the throat than English K. The apostrophe is a vowel marker showing that the I is a long vowel. "Mi'kmaq" originally came from a word meaning "My friends".

They are alleged to have been involved in the tragic death of Anna Mae Pictou Aquash, a member of the Mikmaq First Nation of Nova Scotia, Canada, whose body was found on the Pine Ridge Oglala Lakota Nation in South Dakota twenty-seven years ago. These two men, along with an elderly woman, who is also a member of the Oglala Lakota Nation, has not been indicted, and is currently living in a convalescent home suffering from a stroke and Alzhiemers Disease, have steadfastly maintained their innocence.
