First Aid You should always take with you a very basic set of first aid equipment. Now step back and try to get an overview of the situation http://www.go4awalk.com/skill/emergencies/firstaid.php
Extractions: First Aid When walking in remote areas and the high hills, it is essential that at least one person in your party has some basic competence in First Aid. The application of those skills in remote areas, and in wet, cold and/or windy weather is the challenge we face in dealing with emergencies in the British hills where any illness or injury is potentially more dangerous and difficult to deal with. On this page we included only basic guidance on incident management, diagnosis and general first aid treatment written for those who will be in the role of walk leader. Those of you who are interested in achieving a higher level of competency should consult a handbook on mountaincraft and leadership or take a course for Mountain Leaders. Being Prepared You should always take with you a very basic set of first aid equipment. Select items which are versatile and multi-purpose. Balance commonly used items for minor problems with rarely used but potentially life saving items such as a plastic airway. For example, you should include : antiseptic creams, aspirin, tape, bandages, plastic bags, torch, plastic airway, light plastic gloves (to reduce transmission of infection). Before setting out, it's also wise to find out if any of your companions are taking any medications and/or have any long standing illnesses such as diabetes or asthma. It's important that everyone understands what will be encountered during the day and is confident that this is within his/her abilities.

Extractions: The following text is taken from chapter 1 of the document Introduction to Cryptography http://access.adobe.com/ and then manually edited by hand. When Julius Caesar sent messages to his generals, he didn't trust his messengers. So he replaced every A in his messages with a D, every B with an E, and so on through the alphabet. Only someone who knew the "shift by 3" rule could decipher his messages. And so we begin. Data that can be read and understood without any special measures is called plaintext or cleartext. The method of disguising plaintext in such a way as to hide its substance is called encryption. Encrypting plaintext results in unreadable gibberish called ciphertext. You use encryption to ensure that information is hidden from anyone for whom it is not intended, even those who can see the encrypted data. The process of reverting ciphertext to its original plaintext is called decryption Figure 1-1 illustrates this process.

Extractions: Inside DrKoop News Archive Animations Health Videos Health Tools ... Newsletters Injury Disease Nutrition Poison ... Prevention Definition: A head injury is any trauma that leads to injury of the scalp, skull, or brain. These injuries can range from a minor bump on the skull to a devastating brain injury. Head injury can be classified as either closed or penetrating. In a closed head injury, the head sustains a blunt force by striking against an object. A concussion is a type of closed head injury that involves the brain. In a penetrating head injury, an object breaks through the skull and enters the brain. (This object is usually moving at a high speed like a windshield or another part of a motor vehicle.) Considerations: Every year, approximately two million people sustain a head injury. Most of these injuries are minor because the skull provides the brain with considerable protection. The symptoms of minor head injuries usually go away on their own. More than half a million head injuries a year, however, are severe enough to require hospitalization. Learning to recognize a serious head injury, and implementing basic first aid, can make the difference in saving someone's life.

Published by BUPA's Health Information Team August 2003 Giving emergency life support to a person who has stopped breathing or whose heart has stopped can enable them to survive until professional help arrives. It can make the difference between life and death. Most people can learn basic lifesaving skills, including cardiopulmonary rescucitation (CPR), at a local training centre. Lifesaving skills can be learned for free in just two hours. A persons heart or breathing can stop as a result of a heart attack (cardiac arrest), drowning, electric shock or other injury. As a result, the organs do not receive a supply of oxygen-rich blood and begin to die. The brain is particularly vulnerable and can be damaged by just a few minutes without an adequate supply of blood. Cardiopulmonary rescusitation (CPR) consists of giving rescue breaths (mouth-to-mouth breathing) and chest compressions. In some cases this can restart the heart and breathing. More commonly, such as after a heart attack, CPR circulates sufficient blood to lengthen the time before organ damage occurs. These precious minutes can be sufficient to allow for paramedics or doctors to arrive. The drugs and specialist equipment that they are trained to use will then have a much better chance of helping the casualty to survive.
