The main factor influencing Finland's climate is the country's geographical position between the 60th and 70th northern parallels in the Eurasian continent's coastal zone, which shows characteristics of both a maritime and a continental climate, depending on the direction of air flow. The mean temperature in Finland is several degrees (as much as 10°C in winter) higher than that of other areas in these latitudes, e.g. Siberia and south Greenland. The temperature is raised by the Baltic Sea, inland waters and, above all, by air flows from the Atlantic, which are warmed by the Gulf Stream. When westerly winds prevail, the weather is warm and clear in most of the country due to the 'föhn' phenomenon caused by the Keel range. Despite the moderating effect of the ocean, the Asian continental climate also extends to Finland at times, manifesting itself as severe cold in winter and extreme heat in summer. Since Finland is located in the zone of prevailing westerlies where tropical and polar air masses meet, weather types can change quite rapidly, particularly in winter. The systems known to affect Finnish weather are the low-pressure system usually found near Iceland and the high-pressure systems in Siberia and the Azores. The position and strength of these systems vary, and any one of them can dominate the weather for a considerable time.

From May 19 th to June 1 st , a group of Italian birdwatchers goes to Scandinavia. Mattia Altieri, Stefano Benucci, Tommaso Campedelli, Giorgio Di Liddo, Massimo Fedi, Lorenzo Vanni and Andrea Vezzani are the members of the expedition. We rent a blue Volkswagen Transporter and drive for nearly 5.000 km through Finland and Northern Norway. Driving from Helsinki to Varangerfjord takes a whole day and allows us to see a pair sof Red-necked Grebes in breeding plumage and several tetraonids such as Black and Willow Grouses and Capercaille directly from the car. Just before the Norvegian border, we find a Ruff s lek, with a group of 8 colourful males performing their elegant ritual.

Tapani Matala-aho consider mainly diophantine approximation properties of hypergeometric-, q-hypergeometric- and theta series. By using Siegel's method and Padé approximations irrationality and linear independence results have been enlarged and improved both in the archimedian and p-adic metrics. In a joint work of Bundschuh (Köln, Germany) and Väänänen the ideas from Siegel's method were combined with Padé approximations of certain infinitive products to obtain some interesting linear independence results with good measures. These investigations are planned to continue.

If you did what I suggested, you might've noticed the Scientologists don't link to any critical pages, whereas the critics seem to always link to theirs. Apparently the Scientologists can't deal with any challenges to their beliefs and practices. In fact, they tried to remove the Usenet newsgroup alt.religion.scientology claiming that the name of the group infringes on their trademark "Scientology". In 1998, the Scientologists lost two legal rounds in Finland: the Ministry of Education refused to register the Finnish Church of Scientology as a religious body, and two Scientologists in visible positions were found guilty of libelling a psychologist.
