Recorded history of the Games dates back to 776 B.C., when the five days of sporting events were primarily religious ceremonies. For the first known 13 Games, the competition consisted of single foot race of 200 yards, which was the approximate length of the Olympic stadium. The Games expanded to include additional contests and reached their height by fifth century BC. Men competed, in the nude, in running, wrestling, pentathlon, horse riding and chariot races. Why in the nude well, to keep the ladies out of the action. Women were barred from watching or competing, and were even put to death if they were caught at the early Games. The Olympic competitions for winter sports began in 1924. They were held in the same year as the summer Olympics until 1994, when they began to be held on separate 4-year cycles that were staggered by two years. The Olympics have their origins in ancient Greece. Many myths exist as to how the games began. One of these is that the god Zeus held the first Olympics as a celebration of his victory over his father, Cronus, after which he became the king of the gods. Another of these myths traces the origin of the games to a commemoration of the chariot race between Pelops and King Oenomaus, in which Pelops won the hand of the Kings daughter. The games were held in Olympia in particular because of its religious importance, for an important temple of Zeus was located there, but also because of its location, for it was an easy port for Greeks coming from neighboring territories to reach. Extractions: Under the urging of Kano Jigoro, a judo athlete, the Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) was established in 1911. Two athletes were sent to participate at the Fifth Olympiad in Stockholm the following year. The first 2 Japanese to participate as members of a Japanese team were Mishima Yahiko, a sprinter, and Kanaguri Shiro, a long-distance runner. Though the next games were to be held in 1916, they were canceled due to World War I. By the 1920 Games at Antwerp, Japan had fielded a team of 15, and earned its first awards: a pair of silver medals in singles and doubles tennis. At the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, Japan took its first 2 gold medals, in track and field, and swimming. Athlete Hitomi Kinue became the first woman to join a Japanese Olympic contingent. She received a silver medal in the 800-meter event, and her success encouraged more women to take up competitive sports. A contingent of 131 members represented Japan at the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, including 16 women. Japanese athletes earned a total of 7 gold, 7 silver, and 4 bronze medals in track and field, swimming, equestrian events, and field hockey.

California, with about 12% of the nation's population, produced 28.5% of the U.S.A.'s medalists. Of the 228 American medal winners, 65 cited California as their place of residence. Other top states included Texas (16), Florida (15) and Pennsylvania (11). No other state was in double figures. The Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games and several news organizations have published misinformation about Atlanta's 8.6 million ticket sales and how that figure compares to sales in other Olympic cities. ACOG's home page maintains that 8.6 million "topped the sales of the Los Angeles and Barcelona Games combined." The Wall Street Journal (August 4) reports that Atlanta's ticket sales "exceeded Barcelona, Spain and Los Angeles combined." The Los Angeles Daily News (August 6) makes the same claim. A recent AP story (August 4) offers a different twist, stating that Atlanta sold "more than twice the number sold at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics." None of these sources has it right. The official reports of the 1984 and 1992 Games show that 5,720,000 tickets were sold at Los Angeles and 3,021,740 at Barcelona. You can do the arithmetic.

Seeger-Jones was a five-time New Jersey state champion in cross country and outdoor track and earned EAIAW All-East honors seven times during her collegiate career. During her senior season in 1981, Seeger-Jones was an AIWA All-America selection in cross country, and set the school record in the 10,000 meters outdoor event, as well as the 5,000 meters indoor and outdoor records. Following her career at Rutgers, Seeger-Jones qualified for the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials in the marathon.
