Bridge was sufficiently popular that President Roosevelt drew on its lexicon for the moniker of his agenda, the New Deal. At least the participants in bridge matches determine who wins, unlike, eg, ice skating where the winners are determined by seeing whose clothing designer can wrap up the most synthetic breast in the least fabric with the most sequins and by people who just sit on their butts and hold up numbers. And with all the prominent examples of anti-social behaviour by prominent athletes of the athletic sports, maybe we should try some other non-athletic sports too, like spelling, rhetoric, and mumbly-peg, and see if those give us a better class of heroes.
