Although loss and fragmentation of habitat due to human development are the main causes of wildlife population declines, large numbers of pet, stray, and feral cats roaming the remaining habitat is a serious concern. Compounding this problem are the people and organizations who insist on maintaining cats in parks or adjacent to other sensitive wildlife areas (see "Managed" Cat Colonies in California ). The following studies show effects of cat predation on some of California's native wildlife. Cat Predation Studies in California: East Bay Regional Park District: A two-year study was conducted in two grassland parks in the East Bay Regional Park District. One park had no cats, but over 20 cats were fed daily in the other park. Almost twice as many birds were seen in the park with no cats as in the park with cats.

On a small scale, I volunteer at a local pet supply store catering to the needs of domestic animals along wild birds, squirrels, etc. but they also work in conjunction with the National Humane Society in the adoption of feral, abused, orphaned, and homeless cats. One of their sponsors is Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit organization devoted to the care of over 200 endangered wild cats many of which are listed on the endangered species list. I wrote about Big Cat last month and the wonderful work theyve been doing since 1992. Their contribution was to donate a cattery that was erected inside the store and houses the felines up for adoption. My job is to spend time with the cats and give them hands on human interaction, love and attention. I also have helped with preparing supplies for upcoming surgeries offered at the mobile medical clinic by the Humane Society.

As a result, Hawaiis native birds are extremely vulnerable to predation, especially now that their natural habitat has been greatly reduced by farming and human development. Although domestic cats are not the only threat to Hawaiis rare birds, they are an important factor, even in higher elevations far from human development. Cats can breed year-round in Hawaii, with 3 litters per year of 4 - 6 kittens per litter. Florida Panthers are usually found in pinelands, hardwood hammocks, and mixed swamp forests.
