Extractions: "One can hardly respect a system of education that would leave the student wholly ignorant of the currents of religious thought that move the world society." So said Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson in the 1948 case of Illinois ex rel. McCollum v. Board of Education . And 15 years later, Justice Tom Clark echoed that thought in the high court's majority opinion in School District of Abington v. Schempp (1963). "One's education is not complete," Justice Clark wrote, "without a study of comparative religion or the history of religion and its relationship to the advancement of civilization." But teaching about "the currents of religious thought" or about religion's "relationship to the advancement of civil- ization" is one thing; providing religious instruction is quite another, and that's where some schools have come to grief.

Extractions: ARC Postdoctoral Fellowships FAQ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (REV. 9/5/99, Page 1) Health Insurance -If, and only if, a postdoctoral fellow is receiving compensation in addition to the stipend, the health insurance choices are the same choices that are available to UCHC staff. The range of choices includes HMO, POE, or POS-type coverage. The health benefits officer for the UConn Health Center can provide more detail. If a postdoctoral fellow is not receiving additional compensation, then he/she must purchase his/her own coverage. Upon presentation of a receipt, the postdoc training program can reimburse the fellow for this disbursement, but only for health insurance costs for the individual postdoc fellow (not for family or dependents). Position Title There is no title for the position other than Postdoctoral Fellow. This is not a faculty position. Grant writing and grant submission We can teach you about grant writing and help you to develop a grant application that you could submit upon securing a faculty position. However, according to institutional and NIH regulations, postdoctoral fellows are not permitted to submit grant applications to NIH or to serve as a principal investigator. The only minor exception to this rule is the F32 grant application (which is an application for an individual postdoctoral fellowship). We typically cover grantsmanship topics in the seminar every other year. Can we change the start date specified in the offer letter?

Extractions: Separation of Church and State Home Page Religion in the Public Schools: A Joint Statement of Current Law The Joint Statement of Current Law is a collaborative document undersigned by over 30 religious and civil rights groups that outlines the religious rights of students in the public schools. Most of these organizations are separationist in philosophy and practice, some of them (eg., ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State) agressively so. The document lays to rest the myth that prayer and other types of religious expression are banned in the public schools. On the contrary, religious expression generally enjoys the same protection as other forms of speech. This document forms the basis of President Clinton's guidlines for religious expression in the public schools. A copy of these guidelines were sent to all public school districts in the United States in September of 1995. Return to the top

Click Here to return to the previous page Source of information: http://holidays.johnsesl.com/php/ 1st January: New Year's Day - A federal holiday in the United States. In the early history of America, the new year was observed on March 25 until January 1st, 1753. This is because of the calendar in use then. In 1752, England and America adopted the Gregorian colander after deciding that the Julian colander was not accurate. Now in America the biggest block party of the year happens in New York City's Times Square. Millions of people gather every year to watch the Ball Drop as they count down to mid-night. At mid-night everyone yells HAPPY NEW YEAR. Some people shake hands while others kiss and embrace. The party in Times Square is always televised so the people who can't make to New York can join the celebration from their homes.
