Dodd wanted a special day (much like Mother's Day) to honor her father, William Smart. Smart, a Civil War veteran, singlehandedly raised Dodd and her five siblings on a farm in rural Washington, after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. Dodd's father was born in June, so she chose June 19, 1910 to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane. "How is your father's life different from his father's? His grandfather's? Your's?" This thoughtful Father's Day site is quite different from most because of its focus on ideas rather than projects. It starts with Discussion Topics suitable for classroom or dinner table, and includes suggestions for outdoor family games (Father, May I?) and classroom activities for elementary students. Fun stuff includes special songs for Dad sung to familiar tunes, and famous quotes on fatherhood.

Organize Your Life! An instructor can teach but a father imparts. Imparting is greater than teaching I would also like to say Happy Father s day to other men of vision who http://www.momtime.net/organize/momtime/jun03.html
Extractions: by Cheryl R. Carter The principle: you can teach what you know but you can only reproduce who you are, is especially appropriate for fathers. I refer to reproductive in the sense that it means to create in your likeness and substance- much like God does with us! If you meditate on this principle the depth of its meaning could transform your life. The Apostle Paul tells us though there be many teachers in the body of Christ there are few fathers. (I Corinthians 4:15) The context of this Scripture is interesting in that Paul is addressing the Corinth church leadership. Paul identified himself as a father in the gospel. This identification is marked by suffering and persecution he endured for the Corinthians. He says as a father, he was persecuted for his sons for the gospels' sake. Most notable is that Paul has something to impart to his children in the gospel. Fathers have the ability to impart. An instructor can teach but a father imparts. Imparting is greater than teaching as it a spiritual phenomena. It is clear in Scripture the high value God places on teaching, but He exhorts an even greater value on fathering. Paul's dilemma- so few fathers in the faith- is ours today as well. Paul urged the Corinthians not to judge their leaders by what they say but rather by what they do in their reproduction process. Rare are fathers in the faith today so when I meet one he truly stands out. Such is the case of Dr. Humberto Alfaro. Alfaro is a Latino pastor with a growing and thriving church. His congregation is Salvadoran, Guatemalan, Ecuadorian and some of Puerto Rican descent. Much of his congregation is first generation American. Spanish is their native tongue thus most of the services are done in Spanish.

Extractions: June 17, 2004 Home Back Issues free e-newsletter! By Paul R. Charron - WeNews commentator (WOMENSENEWS) On Father's Day more than 400 men from all walks of life will be recognized for committing to teach boys that violence does not equal strength. These "Founding Fathers," as they are called, are participating in a campaign organized by the San Francisco-based Family Violence Prevention Fund. Now in its second year, this initiative is mobilizing men across the country to take a stand against violence by pledging to serve as role models by teaching boys that violence against women and children is always wrong. Better-known Founding Fathers include such modern day heroes as Joe Torre, the manager of the New York Yankees who founded the Joe Torre Safe at Home Foundation, which develops educational programs aimed at ending the cycle of domestic violence and saving lives. The Founding Fathers initiative is also led by business leaders such as Ted Waitt, founder and chair of Gateway Computers, and Jerome Rossi, president of HomeGoods. Our numbers also include entertainers such as Chris Rock and Bill Cosby and hundreds of others who are fathers, uncles and coaches. By participating in this campaign, these men are standing together to speak with one voice to say "no more" to violence against women. I will be right there with them.

Before the founding of Sons and Daughters In Touch in 1990, those who lost their fathers in Vietnam had no resources to help them understand their emotional experience. Many grew to adulthood wondering if they could somehow be the only one to have endured such a loss. Among the 58,226 Americans lost in Southeast Asia, it is estimated that more than one-third were fathers. Back home, more than 20,000 American children were left to wonder why Daddy wasn't coming home. Today, through local chapter events and National SDIT reunions, and partnerships with Veteran's community, these sons and daughters have become shining examples of America's resilience. By perpetuating the healing inspired by the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, SDIT is teaching the cost of war, and setting an example for others to follow.

Extractions: What is "quality" time? It's time spent together talking, sharing, and learning about each other. Lots of girls say they'd like to spend more quality time with their dads, but they don't know what to do. Here are some ways to spend quality time with your dad (or, if not your dad, another important male role model in your life, such as your grandfather, uncle, or teacher.) Go for a ride. Why not pump up those tires and go for a long bike ride with your dad? You can get great exercise and watch the world go by as you zip around corners and over hills. Check out maps of local trails and plot your course together before you go. Be sure to take lots of water and remember, to always wear your bicycle helmet. Read a book to him. Remember when you were little and your dad used to read you a book before you went to bed? Why not switch roles and read a book to him instead? Turn off the television and read one chapter a night. Try an adventure story, a classic like Old Yeller, or maybe even a mystery that will give you both goosebumps.

On a happier note, Andrew and I are treating ourselves to a fancy prime rib dinner tonight at Lawry's upscale restaurant in Taipei, tomorrow I get to watch him get his butt kicked in basketball by high school students, and we're going to see about courses in Indian cooking. An Indian restaurant in Taipei had an ad in the paper saying it held Sunday cooking classes. And I only have two more weeks and I am done teaching my bushiban! Taiwan weather news: We've had a lot of rain this past week, and a lot of southern Taiwan cities are under water right now because of severe flooding. Crazy stuff! This weekend is the first dry weekend in awhile. Hopefully it'll stay dry for awhile, but I doubt it will. At least it isn't cold and damp anymore, now it's hot and humid!
