Extractions: From the 27th till the 31th of August the 15th European Seminar on Extension and Education took place. The theme during this seminar was "Integrating Multiple Landuse for a Sustainable Future". The seminar is organised bi-annual by one of the participating universities, this year it was organized by the communication and innovation studies group of the Wageningen Universtiy. During the seminar three workshops were held on organic agriculture. In this article I will try to present some of the issues and conclusions which took my attention. The seminar took of with some introductary lectures. Cees Leeuwis gave some implications for new extension practices to support the development of sustainable agriculture. Extension is largely based on innovation-theory. Innovation is a process of renewal, in which social and technical arrangements are re-ordered. Innovation needs coordinated action in a network (according to Roep, 2000). Organic farmers are triggering innovation in agriculture and rural development, because they are confronted with the constraints of social structures which hamper their farm-development. An example of this is the search for ecological pest management by a farmers group. This search is not only on comparing observations as a group, but also on the organisational issues of the farmers research-activity and the right support for these activities (see Schoubroeck, 1999). Cees Leeuwis stated that innovation is also a political affair, and so is the facilitation of the innovation-process.

Extractions: D. SUBJECT/FIELD CODES The subject/field codes are used by responsible officers and alternate responsible officers in completing Forms IAP-66 for exchange visitors in their program. These codes indicate what subject or field of knowledge the exchange visitor is engaged in during the period of his or her program. The codes derive from the USIA publication entitled "Codes for Educational and Cultural Exchange." They must be used unless the responsible officer or the sponsoring organizations are notified by USIA of changes to these codes. Specifically, these codes are used for completing block 4 of the Form IAP-66, in the space marked "SUBJ/FIELD CODE." It is important to be as specific as possible. For example, if an exchange visitor is going to study literary criticism or speech, use the codes for those subjects, rather than the code for "literature, general." All the major subject fields (e.g., medicine, agronomy, etc.) in the subject/field code lists begin with a specialty field titled "general." Use this code if the activity is of a generalized nature, such as an undergraduate studying physics. Almost all major categories have a specialty field titled "miscellaneous" or "other", as in "languages, other." Use this code when a visitor is going to study a topic which is specific but which does not appear in the list. However, because the list of specialty fields is already quite inclusive, you should attempt to fit most subjects into the codes shown. If the responsible officer or alternate responsible officer has a question on the codes, contact the Program Designation Branch of the Exchange Visitor Program Services at USIA.
Stress Management For Couples; Robert J. Fetsch farm STRESS FOUR. Stress management for Couples. By Robert J. Fetsch Another source of tension for some farm couples is related to changing roles. http://www.fww.org/articles/misc/rfetsch1.htm
Extractions: By Robert J. Fetsch One of the unique aspects of farming is that husbands and wives often work closely together. Consequently, farm operations and family life are tightly interwoven. Farm decisions are more likely to affect the entire family than are job decisions of workers in other occupations. For example, a decision to buy a new tractor is likely to affect plans for purchasing a new refrigerator. Especially during the harvest, when one stressful event piles up on top of another and tensions run high, working closely together can lead to high levels of stress for the entire family. Another source of tension for some farm couples is related to changing roles. Fifty years ago our society more clearly defined the differences between activities of husbands and wives. But today, with increasing farm costs, more and more farm wives hold two or more jobs (farm partner, mother-homemaker and off-farm employee). Some men who are accustomed to more traditional sexual roles may have difficulty accepting women working off the farm or making important decisions.
Extractions: Personal Stress Management By Patricia Tanner Nelson and Sue Snider A key to successful farm management is managing yourself and your stress load. The most modern equipment, ideal weather, and accurate record keeping will not guarantee success if you are unable to handle the pressure. Good stress managers take care of themselves. They maintain the strength and stamina needed to meet the daily challenges as well as the big stressors that come along. Good stress managers: They relax by taking walks, spending time on hobbies, changing their attitudes, taking naps, deep breathing, talking to others, and praying or meditating. Many who complain of persistent fatigue and tension have developed poor health habits. They often eat breakfast on the fly, bolt through lunch, and rush through dinner. They fail to get regular exercise and have few leisure interests. They do not sleep enough and fail to take time to relax. They often smoke and drink heavily and resort to sedatives to induce sleep and tranquilizers to calm their nerves.
