The collision of birds with turbines is in that respect a point of great concern. In environmental impact studies, estimates are made of the number of birds killed. After the wind farm has been taken in operation, again investigations have to be carried out to verify if the estimations were right. Various methods for counting bird collisions in a wind farm are being used. All methods have in common that they are labour intensive, and thus expensive and time consuming. Usually the investigations end up with very few figures and large uncertainties. If reliable and cheaper methods become available for counting bird collisions, more insight will be gained in the actual size of the problem, especially in offshore applications. As part of its research on condition monitoring, ECN has developed a low cost, robust and reliable method for detecting bird collisions. Microphones detect the impact of a bird flying against the turbine, a video camera will record the event and store it on a hard disk. Periodically, operators and environmental researchers can remotely obtain the images and sounds of the recorded events and determine which type of bird has collided. The principle is sketched below.
